ARTISTS BEWARE: ZELLE SCAMS
Scammers use Zelle to lure sellers into sending money or goods before they receive payment. The scams often involve fake payment confirmations, requests for upgrade fees to Zelle accounts, and promises of reimbursement that never materialize.
Here's how the Zelle scam on Facebook Marketplace typically works:
1. Buyer contacts seller:
A buyer, who is actually a scammer, will contact a seller on Facebook Marketplace offering to buy their item.
2. Zelle payment request:
The buyer will request to pay using Zelle and will ask for the seller's email address.
3. Fake payment confirmation:
The buyer may send a fake email or screenshot that appears to be a Zelle payment confirmation, but the payment is not actually sent.
4. Upgrade fee request:
The scammer may claim that the seller needs to upgrade their Zelle account to a business account to receive the payment, and that there's a fee for the upgrade.
5. Reimbursement request:
The scammer might claim to have paid the upgrade fee and ask the seller to reimburse them.
6. Seller sends money/item:
The seller, believing the payment confirmation, might send the item or pay the upgrade fee, and the scammer will disappear.
How to avoid the Zelle scam:
Never send money before receiving the item: Avoid sending money or goods before verifying payment.
Verify payment: Check your bank account or Zelle app to confirm the payment was actually received.
Be cautious of fake payment confirmations: Don't trust fake screenshots or emails, especially if they claim to be from Zelle.
Avoid sending money for upgrades: Don't pay for Zelle upgrades without proper verification.
Report suspicious activity: If you encounter a suspicious transaction, report it to Facebook Marketplace
