Mr. Moose, back in July during a summer rain shower. ❤️🫎
I love moose. There is just something about these awkward, quirky creatures that steals my heart. Those long legs, oversized faces, and slightly unbalanced appearance make me smile every time. They are living proof that God has a sense of humor!
Some trips we don’t find a single moose. Other trips, we’ve been lucky enough to find 16.
On our most recent trip, we found only one. And sadly, that one broke my heart.
She had been shot in a recreational area where, in my opinion, hunting shouldn’t be allowed. The moose there are accustomed to people. She had been skinned and gutted for her meat, and what remained was covered in crows, with a bald eagle watching nearby.
I understand hunting. I truly do. But seeing her that way was heartbreaking. I can’t help but question the circumstances. She was so close to the road, and I fear she may have been taken illegally. Whatever happened, it was a painful sight I won’t soon forget.
Photography has given me so much more than beautiful pictures. It has given me a deep love and appreciation for nature and the things God has created.
I get attached to my subjects. Whether it’s a moose I’ve watched through my lens, a favorite windmill that finally comes down, or an old barn that disappears from the landscape, I feel the loss. They become more than just photographs to me. They become memories, stories, and in some strange way, old friends.
So pardon me while I grieve the loss of a friend I never really knew, and at the same time, rejoice that we didn’t find the big guys on this trip.
I hope they found themselves a wonderful hiding place, far away from the roads and out of harm’s way.
Sometimes the best thing I can hope for the wildlife I love is that I don’t find them at all. ❤️
