I’m glad I woke up early for this sunrise 😍 The colors were unreal and the waves were HUGE 🌊🌲 one of my favorite outings at Thunder Hole ☺️

Thunder Hole is a narrow sea cave along the rocky shoreline of Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. Waves entering the small opening force air and water through the cave, producing a loud booming sound that gives the site its name.

The effect is strongest when waves arrive with sufficient force, typically around one to two hours before high tide. Under the right conditions, the compressed water can also create a spray that rises several feet above the inlet.

A peaceful winter scene along the rugged Acadia National Park coastline in Maine 🌊 I stood and waited, while admiring the beauty, for the perfect wave to hit the rocks in front of me ☺️ you can spot Beehive Mountain with a fresh coating of snow in the background 😍

This coastline is shaped by glacial erosion and ongoing ocean forces, where ancient ice carved the granite and Atlantic waves continue to fracture and wear it down.

Looking inland from this stretch of shore, Beehive stands just over 500 feet tall. Its rounded granite form and steep eastern face were shaped by glacial movement more than 10,000 years ago. Together, this section of coastline and the nearby mountains reflect the combined effects of glacial carving and continued Atlantic erosion that define much of Mount Desert Island.

Snowy scenes from Acadia National Park, Maine! β„οΈβ˜ƒοΈ 🌊🌲 Started my snow journey at Sand Beach, watching snow fall softly while waves crashed against the shoreline. I couldn’t help but turn around to admire Beehive, rising just over 500 feet above the coast, dusted in fresh snow ⛰️

From there, I walked along the Ocean Path, following the granite coastline toward Thunder Hole to hear the ocean roar as waves forced their way into the narrow rock channel 🌊

Further up the Ocean Path, the snow-covered cliffs near Otter Cliffs stood tall in the background, rising more than 100 feet above the Atlantic. Snow, surf & forest along Maine’s coast inside Acadia National Park is a combination that never feels ordinary β™₯️
