📸 Two photos. Spot the real boss.

(We'll wait... 😆)

Jim had the opportunity to meet up with Carmen from Professional Pet Trackers and her incredible tracking partner, Finley, to help a family whose dog seemingly vanished without a trace.

No sightings. No confirmed direction of travel. No obvious clues.

Just a family missing a beloved member and searching for answers.

Together, we walked the property, discussed possibilities, reviewed the circumstances, and looked for even the smallest detail that might help explain what happened. Cases like these can be incredibly frustrating because sometimes the absence of clues is the biggest clue of all.

💭 What do YOU think is the hardest part of having a missing pet?
⬇️ Tell us in the comments.

For us, it's knowing how much uncertainty weighs on the families we work with. That's why we don't disappear when the first search ends.

Whether it's:
🐾 Coaching and guidance
🐾 Humane trapping
🐾 Thermal drone searches
🐾 Boots-on-the-ground searches
🐾 Emotional support during the toughest days

—we stay with families through the process.

This pup is still missing, but we aren't giving up.

Every family, and every missing pet, deserves people who care enough to keep showing up.

❤️ Please join us in sending positive thoughts to this family and all the families still waiting for their missing pets to come home.

And while you're here...

Recently, Jim was out refreshing a scent station 🌿 for a missing dog, placing liquid smoke in the area to help draw the dog back and encourage it to linger nearby.

As he worked, he noticed something in the mud — a fresh paw print 🐾

It may seem like a small thing, but when a dog has been missing and sightings are few, even a single track can provide a much-needed boost of hope. It tells us the dog may still be moving through the area and gives us another piece of the puzzle.

The dog is not home yet, but moments like these remind us why we keep showing up, keep searching, and keep believing.

Every paw print tells a story. We're hoping this one leads us to a happy ending. One paw print, a little more hope...

After Erin called us for help locating Layla in the fields of Lancaster County, we searched for several hours with no luck. Based on the last sighting and direction of travel, we expanded our search two times and still...no Layla. Feeling defeated we went back to Erin's house and made a plan to set out cameras and a feeding station and print flyers to be hung the next morning. Then....we caught a break. Layla had doubled back home (as dogs often do), and the rest is history 🐶❤️

🐾❤️Some dogs take themselves for a walk ❤️🐾

Layla apparently decided she wanted to tour Lancaster County.

At 5:00 PM, Erin was pet-sitting for a friend's dog, Layla, when a simple potty break turned into an unexpected adventure. Layla slipped out of the yard and took off across the countryside like she had a very important appointment somewhere.

Erin's son did everything right. He knew not to chase her and used calming signals in an attempt to stop her. When Layla ignored his polite requests and continued her mission, he followed at a safe distance until it was clear she wasn't slowing down. He then headed home to get help.

Erin and her son immediately began searching farm fields, talking to neighbors, and knocking on doors. One neighbor reported that their children had spotted a dog crossing a field nearly half a mile away.

As daylight began to slip away, Erin reached out to us for assistance.

After speaking with her and reviewing the surrounding area on Google Earth, we felt confident that our thermal drone could help cover the vast Lancaster County farm fields. There was just one problem...

It was nearly 90 degrees outside and heat likes to linger for a while.

For thermal imaging, that's about as helpful as looking for a snowball in a snowstorm.

We advised Erin to continue searching, hanging flyers, and driving the farm roads while there was still daylight. Meanwhile, Jim charged batteries, packed equipment, and prepared the drone. Ashley created flyers and began posting to local lost pet groups to get as many eyes looking for Layla as possible.

Then the text came:

"OK. I'm not having any luck driving around looking. So let's do it."

Five minutes later, Jim was on the road.

As darkness settled in, thermal conditions improved. We launched from Erin's property and began scanning field after field.

The drone found dogs.

Barn cats.

Foxes.

Raccoons.

Opossums.

Sheep.

And approximately 17 million cows.

Seriously. So many cows.

But no Layla.

We packed up and moved to a second location.

Then a third.

Hours passed. The search area kept growing. We started asking ourselves difficult questions. Was Layla hiding in one of the wooded areas? Was she tucked away in a barn? Had she traveled miles beyond where anyone expected?

Eventually, we made the difficult decision to call off the search for the night. Erin planned to resume at first light with flyers and door-to-door outreach while we waited for a fresh sighting.

Then fate stepped in.

While driving home, Jim suddenly spotted a dog running down the road.

A very familiar dog.

Jim called and all he could get out was, "ERIN! I SEE HER! SHE'S RIGHT DOWN THE STREET!"

Within moments, Erin was racing out the door while Jim was pulling over and launching the drone again.

There was Layla.

Running between the front and back yards of a nearby property.

Disappearing into thick trees.

Reappearing.

Disappearing again.

Basically playing a one-dog game of hide-and-seek.

Erin calmly called to her, but Layla seemed hesitant to approach with a truck parked nearby and a strange guy standing there flying a drone.

Jim suggested a different approach.

"Walk down the road and give her some space."

So Erin did.

And just like that, everything changed.

As Erin moved farther away, Layla emerged from the woods, stepped onto the road, and started looking for her.

When they finally spotted each other, Erin crouched down.

Layla didn't hesitate.

She came running straight into Erin's arms.

After hours of searching fields, scanning wildlife, relocating launch sites, and questioning whether we'd ever find her, the reunion happened less than a mile from where the whole adventure began.

Welcome back, Layla. 🩷

🐾💙 Persistence Pays Off! 💙🐾

Almost two weeks ago, Megan reached out to us after spotting a handsome gray cat she believed might be injured. After seeing our posts on local lost and found pet pages, she asked if we could help safely trap him.

We set up a humane trap and trail camera and began keeping watch. During the first few days, our mystery cat seemed interested, sniffing around the trap but never committing. Then he disappeared for several days. In the meantime, we did manage to catch one very grumpy raccoon, who was safely released to continue his adventures elsewhere. 🦝

As week two approached, we finally got some exciting trail camera footage. Our clever gray friend had figured out how to enter the trap without setting it off! He carefully stretched over the trip plate and helped himself to the sardines. Smart cat. 😼

Not to be outsmarted, Jim headed back out and made a few adjustments, setting the trap with an extra-sensitive trigger and utilizing a few tricks he learned while volunteering this week with Shadow Cats.

Then came the rain.

As the weather rolled in, the gray cat reappeared. This time, he stepped into the trap... and SUCCESS! 🎉

Jim immediately called Megan, who safely moved the trap—and one very unhappy cat—into her garage and covered it with a towel to help him feel secure and calm.

Tomorrow, Megan will take him to Shadow Cats for a full evaluation, and if all goes well, this clever little guy may have just trapped himself a forever home. ❤️

Thank you, Megan, for caring enough to make that first call and for sticking with him through the process. Sometimes helping a cat takes patience, teamwork, and a little creativity—but seeing them safe makes it all worthwhile.

🐾❤️ When Coaching Beats Searching ❤️🐾

Sometimes the best recovery stories end before they even begin.

Last night around 9 PM, Victoria reached out to us because her all-black cat, Hades, had gone missing. After looking at the map, we realized she was only about five minutes away, so Jim loaded up a humane trap, camera, and some tuna to lay on a soft tortilla shell and headed over to help.

While Jim set the trap, Ashley stayed in contact with Victoria, providing guidance and reassurance. We suggested putting out some dirty laundry carrying familiar scents and bringing the litter box back inside to avoid attracting other animals. Once the trap was set, Jim headed home and we all hoped for good news.

This morning, we woke up to exactly that.

Hades had either quietly snuck back into the house or had been hiding behind the couch for the past two days! Either way, he was safe, sound, and back where he belongs.

We can't take much credit for this one. All we really provided was a little coaching, emotional support, and a trap. But sometimes that's all that's needed to help a worried pet owner stay focused and hopeful until their furry family member makes it home.

Welcome home, Hades! 🖤🐾

Every missing dog is different, but having a plan can dramatically improve the chances of a safe recovery. Knowing what to do—and what not to do—can prevent a dog from being pushed farther away.

Save this graphic for future reference and share it whenever you see a missing dog post. One share could put critical information in front of the person who needs it most. ❤️
