The water level at Prettyboy Reservoir is now 20 feet below normal, due to months of below-average rainfall, and accelerated evaporation rates from historically warm temperatures.

Ten years ago, in the 4000 block of Pulaski Highway, a lone house sat awaiting demolition. But the grim memory of what happened there would not be so easy to demolish.

In November of 1994, Deborah Stevens — the beloved matriarch of a powerful Romani family — was decapitated inside this house by a man who apparently believed Stevens had put a hex on him.

Also known as "Sister Myra," she had lived there for three decades, operating a fortune-telling business. Family members tried for more than 20 years to have the house torn down. Soon after this photograph was taken, they got their wish.
