The Woman in Red at Empire Mine
An AI x Kial Visual Storytelling Series

PART 2 of 5
There is something about old stone buildings, overgrown paths, and filtered light that naturally feels cinematic.

For this image, I wanted the woman in red to feel like she belonged in the scene, not as the obvious subject, but as a quiet figure moving through the garden. That was harder than it sounds.

The scale had to feel right. The depth of field had to match. The dress could not look too sharp or too clean. She had to feel like she was actually standing inside the photograph, not pasted on top of it.

That is the part I find interesting about this kind of work. AI can generate the figure, but it does not automatically understand the photograph the way a photographer does. You still have to judge the light, distance, atmosphere, and believability.

The place is real. The woman is imagined. The final image lives somewhere between the two.

The Woman in Red at Empire Mine
An AI x Kial Visual Storytelling Series

PART 1 of 5
Some places already feel like they are holding a story. Empire Mine State Historic Park has always had that feeling to me.

The gardens, the old paths, the stonework, the quiet corners. It does not take much for your imagination to start filling in the blanks.

This image started as one of my original photographs from Empire Mine. I used AI to imagine a woman in a red Victorian-era dress standing at the far end of the garden path, almost like she had stepped out of another time.

The location is real. The photograph is mine. The woman in red is imagined.

This is not meant to be documentary photography or a historical claim. It is a visual storytelling experiment, part photo study, part ghost story, part creative exploration of what can happen when a real place and an imagined figure meet.

I’ll post the original photo in the comments so you can see where it started.

Some sunsets give, and some sunsets taketh away. Either way, I’m just happy to be outside with my camera.

Be gentle with the ones who take photos of everything. To some, it might seem they aren't living in the moment. But usually these people have experienced so much loss and are deeply sentimental. They don't want to ever forget.

They never want to overlook moments in the future, knowing their memory will eventually betray them. They have a huge heart. They are nostalgic. They cherish memories. They cherish people. These are the ones you want to hold dear. They appreciate everything, even the smallest of gestures. These souls will never make you feel like you don't matter.

Always good to be home. After miles on the road and airports in between, this place still resets everything.

Really great evening out at Empire Mine State Historic Park, photographing Holden (my son) and his group of friends. Hard to beat that backdrop this time of year. More than anything, it was just a solid group of young men and women. Respectful, having fun, enjoying the night ahead.

Tulip season wraps up this weekend at Crystal Hermitage. Last night’s photo walk was a success, with folks traveling from as far as Reno and Elk Grove. The light was incredible, and the gardens are still looking surprisingly vibrant. If you’ve been thinking about going, now’s the time.

This is sunset from Sunset Ridge at Ananda.

The 2026–27 April-through-April garden calendars are now available at shops throughout the community. Thirteen months of spring beauty.

Just released Gold Country Field Notes #6. This one explores the Independence Trail — the first wheelchair-accessible wilderness trail in the U.S.

For years, I spent time on this trail documenting it. In 2020, the Jones Fire burned through the corridor, destroying major sections of it.

I had the chance to visit shortly after the fire while filming a documentary — and it was a completely different place.

More on that experience here:
