// Dornoch beach was one of our last stops in Scotland this time… and it’s surprisingly one of the places that stays with us most. The way the dunes sit at the edge of everything, like the land has come to a slow, deliberate pause before meeting its partner the sea. It feels like the very top of the world. And yes, there are beautiful places further north… Scotland doesn’t run out of them, but Dornoch has a particular kind of movement, it almost encircles you in a dance. A deep-breath kind of spot. Windy sands, lovely golf course, seaside playgrounds, small mountains ghosted in the distance, and a storybook cobblestone town at your back, like something out of a child’s mind-scape.
Chris and I actually stumbled into it in the fall, most surprised by its character. I don’t think either of us said much for a little while, and then we literally laid in the tall dune grass and talked for hours. I remember laying there saying “the girls would just adore this.” So I’m still a little in awe that we actually got to bring them.
If you ever find yourself there, and I hope you do, The Dornoch Bookshop is an absolute must. The kind of place that earns its own paragraph another day.
