Themes of family, honor, sacrifice, fortitude, character, and grit.
While they are often a serious and steadfast culture, they are humorous people too—though not in an overt way. Their combination of wit and grit both suits our family, and blesses us. The Scottish wit sneaks up on you and bites you on the tail. A dry humor adorns them, born from generations who learned to laugh not because life was easy, but because it decidedly was not. It was demanding. It required endurance - and a commitment to the whole, rather than the individual.
There is something quite grounding about a land that remembers its own story and purpose in that way.
There, stone walls have outlived empires. Family names are carried like treasured heirlooms, and the landscape itself is unwilling to forget the blood that was shed for it.
Perhaps that’s what this country and I have most in common: we understand the price of blood.
The deepest freedoms have always been purchased through sacrifice. And the things won at such a cost cannot be so easily taken away.
When love is rooted in sacrifice rather than self-indulgence, it ceases to be something consumed and becomes something stewarded. It is held with greater reverence, protected with greater care, and valued all the more because you know what it required.
Scotland gently asks in return what stories you are carrying… what inheritance you are leaving behind, and whether you’ve remembered that history is most often built through ordinary faithfulness, through the giving up of oneself.
