Joey keeping a vigilant eye on the boat and the operation from the water. He was always extremely focused on the details and never missed a beat.

I shared an image with you all yesterday of Joey beginning to dig a bag of clams out of the mud. Here he is after most of the bag has been dug out. The grit, the determination is palpable. I can still hear that suction noise from the bag lifting off the mud. This bag still has to be lifted up onto the airboat, so the work here is only half done.

After a full day of grueling digging under the scorching sun, Joey and his crew swing the airboat back around to pick up a few last bags. The grit and dedication it took to move this bag alone in the sweltering coastal Georgia heat, with temperatures soaring above 90 degrees, is genuinely staggering.

Three Rock Ballasts on Georgia's coast. Centuries ago, British ships arriving on Georgia’s coast carried heavy rock ballast to stay stable on the open sea. Once loaded with timber or cotton, they dumped the stones along the shoreline before setting sail. Over time, these discarded rocks helped shape and build up many of Georgia’s barrier islands.

Pulling clam bags during low tide. The red hose is used to dislodge and remove large amounts of dirt from each bag before it is resprayed on the boat. From here, the clams are cleaned again and returned to shore, bound for their final destination. This challenging work is done in a beautiful setting.

Out on the coastal flats, movement is an art form. These workers glide across the low-tide mud, shifting just the surface layer to keep from sinking. Watching their balance, rhythm, and grit in the Georgia heat is something to behold. I can still hear the sloshing and slapping of mud.

Here is Joey navigating between bags of clams while the sun rises. All operations are tethered to the tides. The water moves quick and so do the workers.
