If you haven’t seen “Sinners” yet, go see this gem in a movie theater. It begins in 1932 in the American South. I have been to some of the places it shows in Mississippi. The cast is amazing with Delroy Lindo, Michael B.Jordan, Li Jun Li, Yao Bo Chow, Hailee Steinfeld, Jayme Lawson, Miles Caton, etc. (There are way too many great performers to list the whole cast.) You will recognize many. Ryan Coogler has given us a fable that’s a bit unexpected. It begins slowly, setting up the game board piece by piece. Each character is a gem and each actor is perfectly cast. You need to watch through the credits as there are two different scenes, one at the very end. The movie is steeped in lore as well as history and it jumps to 1992. There’s not much more I can say without spoiler alerts. There is quite a bit of violence and some s*x. The music is wonderful, and at times, unexpected, as is the dancing. Wunmi Mosaku brings the protective magic and is very charismatic. Some may think it’s history as it should have been.

Although it has been in theaters a while and has been popular, I only was able to see "A Minecraft Movie" today. My review is this: It is fun! Instead of the studio suits taking bits from all sorts of successful films, the movie was turned over to the creative people. It is directed by Jared Hess (also General Chungus), who directed "Napoleon Dynamite", and has embraced the silliness of life. Those who have played the game every spare moment, and those who have never put the words "craft" and "mine" together will enjoy this film. The script has the distinction of having the most creative use of Jennifer Coolidge, ever. Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen are having so much fun that it is practically a strain of COVID. I challenge you not to laugh and giggle through it. The comedy and music add a good deal to a solid game-inspired plot and a love of the 1980s. I recommend it for your enjoyment. Make sure you watch the credits all the way through. I think there will be a sequel.

Just a reminder: next Tuesday, May 6 (2025) is the first Tuesday of the month so it’s Senior Day at Walgreens. (Most senior discounts start at age 55. On my 55th birthday my Army buddies took me to Bob Evans). At Walgreens ask for your senior discount at the checkout and get 20% off nondiscounted items. Wednesday is senior day at DQ. Ask for your discount but they have veterans discount every day. (Some DQs don’t participate, such as the one in Lawrenceville.). Always ask, you’d be surprised.

Regal theater advertised a senior discount before 2020, but it was AARP. Now you can get an actual senior discount from them online. After being stalked by AARP in my 30s, when I was pregnant, and getting scam mail saying I’d signed up but hadn’t paid, I block all AARP and am an AMAC member because they ask me what I want before lobbying on my behalf.

Back to senior discounts, always ask. If they have a restaurant senior discount and you’re paying, your whole party gets the discount.

There are sites which list senior discounts, but I only memorize the places I frequent. Kroger and Publix discontinued their senior discounts. I asked the owner of a new place around the Mall of GA if I could get a senior discount. The owner replied, “ I hadn’t thought about it, but since you ask, I’ll knock off 20%.” So, that pretty much covered the tip. It never hurts to ask. If you join a waitlist using an app, it may give you a bar code for 15% off your tab at the register (Cracker Barrel and Olive Garden have done this in the past.)

Ask for your senior discount.

Once again, requested by NSHS people: I know that many of you know to use Throat Coat tea, honey, chicken broth, etc. when your throat is bad you are losing your voice. See my previous post on nasal flushes. But the best way to clean the gunk off your vocal cords is to gargle wine vinegar. This is a time tested trick of opera singers. Enzio Pinza famously did this as did Mary Martin during the Broadway run of “South Pacific”. I have done this with great success. You can gargle hourly or just twice a day. If you don’t have wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar is my next choice. But I have used rice vinegar or balsamic vinegar in a pinch.
I keep a water flask in the choir loft at church to keep from getting too dry with all the singing, but just take a sip at the time. (What goes in must come out, that’s why you don’t overdo it.)

So, for North Springs High School Class of 1970 (1969 and 1971), especially Steve Bowman:

Lettuce Juice

Take the core of a head of iceberg lettuce (which is usually thrown away) and put it in a quart of boiling water for 15 minutes. Strain. Flavor with bouillon, spiced cider mix, marinara sauce, etc. (Putting it in turkey broth is for really heavy sleep). Take 6-8 ounces at bedtime. It makes your brain produce a muscle relaxant so you wake up loose with no medicine head. It also induces Delta sleep, the deep healing sleep you lose as you age (see it in babies).

This is very last minute because payment is due today (April 5, 2025) by Venmo and full registration is due Monday, April 7. I only received this link earlier today. Dorcas and I signed up for the luncheon April 12, at Perimeter Mall (Little Maggianos Italian Restaurant) at 11:30 AM.

For some reason, I thought that in February of this year that I received an email citing another date, for whych U had a conflict. I apologize for dropping the ball on this. I can only say that I had other things on my mind.
