We spent a lot of time in Bayou La Batre, and I hope to only show the favorites - but even that is too many. We're on the ground now and saw these two boats, not the newest in the fleet, but still appealing to us. The Shootist is a film by one of our favorite actors, John Wayne, so it seemed a good one to "shoot." The dark sky added a bit of drama, although as you will see in some of the later shots, it did not stay long, and bright blue skies came back later.

To give you an overview, this is the majority, but not all of the sh*****ng fleet at Bayou La Batre. There are a few side channels where boats are docked but this is the main channel and where all of the maintenance and support buildings are at. In the distance and at the very top of the image is the Gulf of America. There are A LOT of boats here and at the right time of year lots of activity. Two boats were getting ready to depart - but that only means in the next day or two as there are many things that must be done before they leave for 30 days or more. Often it takes a 5,000 tanker to fuel the boat and, although not fully visible, the building at the very bottom near the center of the image is the icehouse where they fill the hold with ice and then shrimp while they are at sea. We'll be posting a few of our favorites from both the air and shore.

A first look at Bayou La Batre, AL - a major sh*****ng location on the Gulf. We operated out of Moss Point, LA and was about a 30-minute drive to the Bayou and just north of Pascagoula. These painted oyster shells were reminiscent of the many that we had seen in Mobile years ago but sort of set the tone for the postings over the next couple of days. We worked in/around this area for 2 days and even made a quick trip by there before heading to Apalachicola - the next leg. We had great conditions.

We always look for landmarks and other interesting sights to see along our routes. One of the last such landmarks before we headed east toward New Orleans was this interesting building - Fisherman's Castle at Irish Bayou. I didn't really find any history about the building, and it was clearly not occupied (nor did it seem to be in a state of disrepair) it sits by itself on a large lot on, appropriately Irish Bayou. It's really an inlet/bay at the far east end of Lake Pontchartrain.

Nature can be funny and interesting. Another Night Heron with some antics that I think are related to finding a mate. Spring is always a great time of year!

In the same area as the stilt, we saw a small group of beautiful ducks flying nearby and then ultimately landing. When we went to explore that spot, we saw several birds including this great example of a Black-belied Whistling Duck. We first saw these nearly 30 years ago on a birthday trip to Port Aransas, TX when 6 of them were all lined up on a dock railing. This is one the several, and while not necessarily my favorite, the one-footed pose on the tree branch was somewhat unique. We have a short trip approaching so I may upload another image later in the day and then pick it back up when we get home.

We're out of New Orleans, and while we have several more images worthy of posting, we have many more stops to document so off we go. Due to road closures and bridge problems, we had to take an alternate route to Moss Point (aka Pascagoula) which we were going to use as our base of operations to see shrimp boats in Bayou La Batre. Along the way north out of New Orleans we found a small pull-off that had water on both sides, and it obviously needed exploring! One of our first sights was a really nice, Black-necked stilt standing in a very smooth area of water. We do love seeing and photographing birds of nearly all types but those in a particularly scenic setting are favorites.
