~Bald Eagle with Prey~
The first time we visited this particular spot on the Klamath River, right after we got there, a bald eagle showed up and grabbed a duck from the bank that it was saving for later. Then it flew away right over us. Pretty cool.

~ On Thin Ice ~
On a cold, sunny day in late January, while we were exploring the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge on the Oregon/California border, Sue looked out of the passenger window and yelled, “There’s a coyote in the water!”

At first we thought it was swimming across the canal, but when Sue got it in her lens she realized it was in trouble. The poor thing had fallen through the ice. Usually we stay in the car, but we jumped out to see if we could help. Sue started looking for a branch or something for it to grab, but there weren’t any trees. I was trying to figure out how to get down there, but I’m not sure we could have done anything even if I did.

But it didn’t matter. When the coyote saw us as we appeared over the tall grass, its struggle took on a new urgency. It scurried onto the ice, up the bank and over it, and was gone. Wow.

The Corkscrew Tree began life more than a thousand years as four separate coast redwoods that grew in a "cathedral ring" before becoming fused together into one gnarly tree.

~ Harrier ~
The more I get to know hawks, the more fascinating they become. They really seem to be the most successful raptors, judging by how many there are. While most hawks (like red-tail and rough-legged) prefer to hunt from a post, harriers fly over fields all day looking for prey. They expend more energy, but it probably evens out because they'll catch more by covering more ground. Either way, there are hawks everywhere, even in your neighborhood or city block.
