When I hear the word towboat, the M/V Kentucky is the vessel that instantly comes to mind.

A familiar sight on the Ohio River, she's spent years doing what towboats do best: moving petroleum products safely and efficiently to destinations throughout the inland waterway system. There's nothing flashy about the job, but that's exactly the point. Day after day, trip after trip, she gets it done.

Measuring 142 feet long by 44 feet wide and powered by a pair of CAT 3516 diesel engines producing 4,000 horsepower, the Kentucky has the muscle to handle the demanding work asked of her. Whether pushing loaded tank barges through swift currents or maneuvering through tight quarters, she's built for the task.

Like many great towboats, the M/V Kentucky doesn't need to make a show of her capabilities. She simply shows up, goes to work, and makes hard work look effortless.

Calling the shores of Catlettsburg, Kentucky home for the evening, the M/V Frank Stegbauer is a reminder that appearances can be deceiving on the inland waterways.

Measuring just 120 feet long and 35 feet wide, the vessel is modest in size compared to the massive tows it handles. Yet when coupled to a full tow, the Stegbauer can push loads stretching nearly the length of four football fields, moving thousands of tons of cargo along America's inland river system.

Powering the vessel are 3,600 horsepower worth of GM 16-567BC diesel engines, providing the muscle needed to maneuver and propel immense loads through the twists and turns of the Ohio River. While the tow may draw the eye, it's the horsepower and skill aboard the towboat that make moving such a massive amount of cargo possible.

As the sun sets on another day along the Ohio, the M/V Frank Stegbauer rests at Catlettsburg, ready to get back underway when the next call comes.

While the line boats often get the attention, vessels like the M/V Dwain Harper are the backbone of daily river operations. Serving as a general-purpose workboat, the Harper handles the countless tasks that keep commerce moving on the Ohio River. From building tow and preparing barges for the larger push boats to transporting crews and supporting maintenance operations along the riverbanks, these crews are always on the move.

In this photo, the crew is hard at work pumping rainwater from a barge, one of many jobs that must be completed before cargo can continue its journey. It's demanding work performed in all weather, at all hours, and often far from the spotlight.

Their efforts may go unnoticed by most, but without workboats like the M/V Dwain Harper and the dedicated crews aboard them, the river industry simply wouldn't function. They are the quiet professionals who keep the fleet moving, one task at a time.
