A few months ago, my partner and I had the most incredible encounter with a female White-Tailed Ptarmigan and her chick. After a few minutes of stillness and intense inquisition on her part, she decided we were of no threat to her or her chick. That little fuzzy face came poking out from under her brood patch, and the pair began foraging together through the heather and other mountain flowers. Hands down, this has to be one of the most intimate birding encounters I've ever had. Photographed at Mount Tahoma, Washington.
[Image Description: A large, chicken-sized brown and white mottled bird with a body shaped roughly like a football sits facing to the left against a background of green folliage. It's large, dark eye is fixed on the image viewer. From underneath the bird, a small fuzzy chick is poking out with it's eyes clozed, dozing in the afternoon sun.]

It's World Sea Bird Day, which in my book includes shorebirds, pelagic birds, and everything in between. These birds embark on some of the longest migrations of any birds, some going from pole to pole, and some amassing lifetime distances traveled greater than the Earth's distance from the moon. These birds are also incredibly sensitive to pollution and the effects of climate change, with many species actively in decline as a result. I encourage us all to take a moment today to think about how we can show up for these birds who don't have voices of their own to name the changes they need to survive. Shown is a Snowy Plover, photographed along the Oregon Coast.

[Image Description: A small white and beige bird with relatively long, thin black legs and a short but thin black beak and a dark eye stands facing to the left with one leg raised mid-step on a sand beach. The bird has a green and blue leg band on its left leg and a black leg band on it's right leg.]

I had a lovely trip with two weekends ago to the Oregon Coast, and many a bird were enjoyed. I really am feeling drawn to this frame of Black Oystercatchers against the salt spray coming off the Pacific Ocean. Their red-cigar-bills and pink boots are always good for a smile!! Photographed at Boiler Bay State Wayside, OR.

[Image Description: Two medium-sized black birds with elongated, thin red beaks, long pink legs and feet, and red-ringed yellow eyes stand facing left toward the ocean on a large black boulder with water splashing in the background.]

Last weekend's bird outing to Slavin Conservation Area had so many great sightings!! One one of my favorites was this adorable Mountain Chickadee and it's partner flitting into and out of this nesting cavity! Photographed in Cheney, WA.

[Image Description: A small, mostly black and white bird is grapsing the bark on the side of a tree at the entrance to a hole just big enough for it to fit through. It is looking over it's shoulder to the right.]

The last lifer I saw in NYC was this adorable Carolina Wren. I felt like I had won something when on my last morning in the city, walking through Prospect Park, this tiny little brown bird hopped onto this log just off the path with a second one not far behind. It was the perfect bird to wrap up my New York birding experience.

[Image Description: A small brown bird with a thin and relatively long hooked beak, sits on a rotted out log facing to the left against a background of brown and green.]

Another of the lifer birds I saw in NYC was the Great Black-Backed Gull. It took a couple of days, but once I had seen one, these birds were everywhere!! I photographed this one under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Manhattan side of the river.

These are what I call a "nuance bird", a bird species that looks kind of like the birds you know from home, but with the nuances of a new-to-me place. Identifying these species is one of my favorite parts of traveling and helps me forge connections between what is familiar and what seems unknown.

[Image Description: A large bird is facing to the left in front of a background of blue water. The birds has white head feathers clearly demarkated from black wing and body feathers. It has a relatively small dark eye, and a large yellow beak, thick and slightly downturned with a with a small hook at the end and black streak across its width near the tip.]

I had a lovely visit to New York City last week to see my good friend , and of course we went birding 3 out of the 4 days I was there!! My first lifer of the trip was this gorgeous American Woodcock, photographed at Bryant Park. Apparently every year a handful of these inland shorebirds hang out at this park in the midst of the surrounding highrises, which I think is wild.

[Image Description: A medium-sized dappled tan bird with a long, straight beak and large brown eye on the side of its head rests facing to the right in a sunny flowerbed with green shoots poking up all around it.]

In other spring news, Western Bluebirds are back in the greater-Spokane area!! Right at the end of a bird outing last weekend at the McLellan Conservation Area, a female perched on a Ponderosa Pine bough ahead of us, and then this male came in alongside us!! Harbingers of spring are all around us!

[Image Description: A medium-sized bird with blue feathers from head to take and an orange and white underside sits on a lichen-encrusted brown branch facing to the left against a yellowish-blurred background.]

I don't think I've ever done an introduction post and there's quite a few new people tuning in here, so here it goes!

I'm Sara Newman (she/her), and I am an avid birder and wildlife photographer based in the PNW. I became disabled in 2020 after surviving a hiking accident, and that has become a big part of my identity, as my accessibility considerations dictate a lot of how I go about doing the things I love.

Some of you may have noticed that I have become considerably less active on here over the last year, and the main culprit of that is medical school, which takes up most of my time these days. I still try to get out and photograph the birds as often as I can!

Thank you all for swinging by from time to time to check out my work! My photos are a big source of joy for me, and I hope they bring you joy as well!

[Image Description: Sara, a white woman with bown hair in a ponytail wearing a grey sweatshirt and black leggings, stands looking to the right over a short chainlink fence on a paved path bordered by tall deciduous trees. She is supporting herself with a wooden cane in one hand, her other hand tucked into the pocket of her hoody. A large black camera hangs around her neck.]

Yesterday I had the best views I've ever had of Red Crossbills!! These are the Ponderosa Pine, or Type 2, subspecies of Red Crossbill, meaning that their primary cone food source is Ponderosa Pines. There were so many of them hopping about on the ground and flitting though the low branches of the trees. Amidst them all, this female (right) feeding a juvenile (right) caught my eye. Photographed at the McLellan Conservation Area, Nine Mile Falls, WA.

[Image Description: Two small birds sit on the gassy ground. The bird on the right is upright on its legs, facing left with its beak open. It's beak is like two half moons facing eachother, and very pointed at the tips. The other bird is to the left and is against the ground with its face pointed up and toward the other bird, begging.]

Came home for the long weekend and went out to Monroe, WA today to try and see the vagrant Whooper Swan. It was just waiting to be seen!!

[Image Description: A large white bird with a long neck, black eye, and a bicolored beak of yellow on most of the top half and black in the bottom half stands facing to the right in a field of thick green grass.]

A surprise bird from my bird outing this weekend was this Townsend's Solitaire (I prefer Solitary Thrush). I did not expect to see this bird in the lowlands perched on a tree at the edge of a snow-covered field, but that's exactly where it was. Birding by car, we we able to snap photos and leave without disturbing it from its perch. Photographed in Reardan, WA.

[Image Description: A small bird sits perched on a bendy evergreen branch facing to the right, the branch curved slightly down under its weight against a white background. The bird is overall a drab grey brown color with darker wing tips and tail, and a white ring of feathers around its dark eyes. It has a narrow, black triangular shaped beak and dark legs.]
