Featuring 35 pairs of artists from 30 higher education institutions across the Southeast, the exhibition reflects the rich and diverse landscape of contemporary art education. The works on display span a broad spectrum of artistic approaches, demonstrating both depth of subject matter and originality. Through inventive material use and a strong engagement with traditional techniques, the pieces exemplify the fusion of foundational skills and innovative exploration cultivated within today’s studio programs.

Up for another week: ‘Mono no aware’ is a Japanese term that means “beauty tinged with sadness.” More specifically it refers to the bittersweet awareness that all things inevitably change form or come to an end. At the GCCA’s Community Gallery this November and December, exhibiting artist Leigh Mitchell presents over 30 black & white photographs inspired by the ephemeral nature of things.

On view are images of fleeting moments occurring in nature, objects that reveal marks of time, weather, and human use, and trees with scars, stories, and future destinies.

It is both a deeply personal exploration and expression of appreciation for life and a comment on the fact that, due to the damaging impact we are having on our environment, we don’t know how long human life and the earth as we know it will last.

This exhibition is funded in part by the Metropolitan Arts Council with funds received from the City of Greenville, BMW Manufacturing Company, Michelin North America, Inc., SEW Eurodrive, and the South Carolina Arts Commission.

I found it interesting that two of the main pictures in a recent New York TImes article were taken in the same spots where I took photographs. You can see mine next to the New York Times photos below. They are from an article called ‘There’s No Spring Break Here’: Florida’s Gulf Coast Fights to Rebound After Hurricane Ian.

People rely on those shrimp boats for their livelihood. Here are some paragraphs from the article: On Sept. 28, Hurricane Ian made landfall on Cayo Costa, a barrier island northwest of Cape Coral and Fort Myers, Fla., as a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of more than 150 miles per hour. Killing 149 people in Florida, it was the state’s deadliest hurricane since 1935. More than four months later, the storm’s extraordinary power remains evident: In Fort Myers Beach, multistory oceanfront apartment buildings are still just piles of twisted steel and concrete rubble, and massive sh*****ng boats sit tilted and smashed together like toys in the corner of a tub.

Some worry that the storm will accelerate change. “We don’t think it can come back,” she said, referring to the area’s laid-back character and “old Florida” style. “Now people are saying big investors are going to come in with big money and turn this into the new Miami.”

In Fort Myers Beach, residents still pick up their mail at a trailer. Glass, nails and unidentifiable twisted debris remain scattered along the ground. Around town, many flags, bumper stickers and T-shirts are emblazoned with “FMB STRONG.” On a recent Saturday, a tiny spot called the Beach Bar was packed with a crowd of locals who looked storm-weary but exuded an ornery refusal to retreat. Now, only the concrete slab remains. But that hasn’t stopped the regulars. The crowd showed up with beach chairs and coolers. “Our concept didn’t change,” said Matt Faller, the manager. “Cold beer, live music, toes in the sand.”
