Too Tough to Tame Lights

The clouds caught the glow from the race track lights and carried them miles away.

Light travels and scatters. It lands in places that had nothing to do with where it started.

We do that.

We don’t always get to see how far our actions travel. A kind word gets repeated, a small favor gets passed along. Someone who was given a little grace is more likely to give it to the next person. What starts with us can end up miles away, lighting a place we’ll never even know about.

So put something good out there. Be kind. You never know how far the light will travel.

International Day of Charity is Today

A bird and an alligator have almost nothing in common, really. And yet, there they are, sharing space in a marsh without demanding the other explain itself or leave.

On International Day of Charity, maybe generosity isn’t always about what we give away. Sometimes it’s the space we’re willing to give to somebody a lot different than ourselves.

Nature has room for everybody. We should too.

CONEFLOWERS

A coneflower is really hundreds of flowers pretending to be one. Look closely at their spiky center. Each little point is its own tiny flower, opening in sequence and keeping bees and butterflies coming back throughout the summer.

Then the petals fade, the color disappears, and we might think the good part is over, but goldfinches know better. They come for the seeds, balancing on dried stalks we might have cut down weeks ago. What looks finished to us is exactly what they’ve been waiting for.

We’re awfully quick to decide when something has had its day, but nature rarely is. She keeps finding uses for things past their pretty stage.

There’s probably something in that for the rest of us.

Clear skies are overrated.

A clear sky can produce a perfectly decent sunrise, but clouds turn it into something grand. They give the light edges to outline, gaps to pour through and enough unpredictability to keep a person taking “one more picture” for the next twenty minutes.

When the sun is close to the horizon, its light travels through more atmosphere. More of the blue wavelengths scatter, leaving the reds and oranges to light up the bottoms and edges of the clouds. Wow. That’s deep.

We spend a lot of time wishing for clear skies. Fair enough. Clear is easier, but easier and better aren’t always the same thing. Sometimes what we wanted out of the picture is the very thing giving it depth. Shallow living is dull.

It’s annoying when nature makes a point this well, but here we are.

There’s a reason we look for the silver lining.

Clouds have a way of changing everything underneath them. They can make a familiar place feel moody, mysterious, even a little unsettled. Then somewhere in all that gray, the light sneaks through, and suddenly the same sky looks completely different. The pelican flying in these added a cool element.

The phrase "silver lining" comes from the way sunlight can illuminate the edges of a dark cloud, creating a bright outline we can't help but notice.

Maybe that’s why we keep looking for silver linings in our own lives. Not because every difficult thing secretly turns out to be wonderful, or because we're supposed to slap a happy ending onto something that hurts. Sometimes the silver lining is much smaller than that—a person who shows up, an unexpected change in direction, a little hope arriving in a place where none was expected.
When life gets heavy, we don’t have to pretend the clouds aren’t there, but believe there’s still something bright beyond them.

Be Bison.
Go Nature Yourself. It’s not an insult; it’s an alternative.
When the world gets too loud, too irritating, and too full of people with opinions they desperately want you to hear, think of something that couldn't care less about any of it…like a bison.
Be like the bison: Consider the fact that this enormous animal spends most of its day doing the very unremarkable work of nothing but eating grass, and only moving when it needs to move. He’s resting when he needs to rest. He’s paying attention to what actually matters in his immediate surroundings, and he is a total badass.
Meanwhile, humans can ruin an entire afternoon because somebody used the wrong tone in an email.
That's the idea behind Go Nature Yourself. Get away from the noise long enough to remember that the world is much bigger than whatever has been taking up too much room in your head. Find a trail, a marsh, a tree, a bird—or 1,500 pounds of perspective standing beside the road.
Sometimes you don't need to figure everything out.
You just need to Go Nature Yourself.

The Green Line

It was one of those gray days when the landscape seemed to have settled into a dull mood. Dark spruce lined the water, a couple of ducks floated near the shore, and the marsh was just a quiet green beneath a boring sky.
Then, for a few seconds, the light changed. A break in the clouds sent a narrow band of sunlight across the marsh, and suddenly the dull green seemed to glow. Within seconds, the clouds shifted, and the whole scene went back to gray.

We spend much of our lives trying to get the timing right, as though enough
planning could make everything arrive exactly when we're ready for it. But some of the best things don't work that way. An opportunity appears, someone crosses our path, an idea finally makes sense, or something we've been waiting for quietly falls into place.
Not every good thing has to be chased. Sometimes it finds us.

Butterflies know better than to live on sweetness alone.
Nectar gives them energy, but not all the salts and minerals they need. So they gather on damp soil, sand and even animal droppings to sip on what’s there. It’s called puddling. These gatherings are mostly males collecting sodium they can later share with the girls during mating. Nature’s version of bringing something useful to the relationship.

Turns out humans can’t live on sweetness alone either.
We reach for the flowers, the easy days, the pretty pictures, the plans that behave themselves, but the most useful things we carry came from the messier parts: perspective, backbone and compassion.
Nobody photographs them and says, “Look how beautifully I’m growing through this complete disaster.” Mostly, we just try to get through them without biting anyone.

Both matter, but only one usually gets posted. You gotta get dirty sometimes.

Those dam beavers.

Beavers build dams to stop the water, right? Maybe not.

The sound of running water is the trigger for a beaver. Researchers have played recordings of just water running and watched the beavers pile sticks and mud around the speaker. What?! Think about that. The water wasn’t going anywhere. But the sound of it was enough to make the beaver start building.

Is there something someone is doing that you have convinced yourself you know why they are doing it? Maybe it's another reason. Maybe there’s more to the story you haven't thought about. Maybe they would prefer a different tone for something?

You’re being watched right back.

In fact, the raven probably has questions about what you are doing. Why are you in the woods? What are you doing there? Are you a friend or foe?

When you spend enough time around ravens, you’ll realize they aren’t just observing you...they’re studying you.

Ravens are very intelligent. They solve problems, plan ahead, remember people’s faces, and learn from one another, of course. When hiding food, they keep track of whether another raven is watching and later move their stash if they suspect it has been seen.

We walk through nature thinking we are the observers. We identify birds, take pictures, and watch where the birds go. But they are watching us, too.
Are ravens evolving more than humans? Some people’s behavior makes me wonder!

Maybe being a little more raven wouldn’t hurt: look closer, stay curious, learn from what you see, and be more friendly than "foey" (a LiveFaab word).
