One, two, three, four...

Do you count mountain ridges? You spot one, then another, and just when you're sure you've counted them all, some faint blue ridge shows up in the distance.

Those fading shades of blue come from sunlight scattering through the atmosphere. The farther away the mountains, the more air you're looking through, making each ridge appear softer and bluer.

I guess some of us never get tired of being in the middle of nowhere, which is somewhere and really something special too.

Ever bitten off more than you can chew?

This great blue heron may know the feeling. Herons swallow fish whole, usually headfirst, so this one takes careful planning.

A heron stands almost motionless in shallow water, watching for the slightest movement. Then, in a split second, its long neck shoots forward and then it's dinner time.

There's something satisfying about watching a creature that lives entirely on its own terms. No schedules, no expectations, no one telling it how to spend its day. Just the freedom to be wild, even when lunch turns out to be a bigger challenge than expected.

Imagine seeing almost everything around you without turning your head.

Dragonflies can. This darner's enormous eyes contain thousands of tiny lenses, giving it a panoramic view. Useful when your dinner is flying around, trying not to become dinner.

Dragonflies are great hunters. They can spot a mosquito in flight, predict where it's heading, and catch it with remarkable precision. Their four wings move independently, allowing them to hover, fly backward, and change direction in an instant.

So, the next time a dragonfly zips past your head, watch where it goes. There's a good chance it spotted something you never even noticed.

How can one place be this beautiful?

This is Alaska, where you can drive for miles and miles and come across views like this over and over, making you wonder how on earth so much beauty ended up in one place.

I think we sometimes forget how incredible this planet really is. Places like this make you forget everything you were worrying about five minutes ago.

And wouldn't it be nice if we spent a little more time looking at things like this and a little less time looking at our phones?

Who says romance is dead?

Hanging upside down at a bird feeder, this male red-winged blackbird appears to share a little food with his female companion. Not exactly a candlelit dinner, but the gesture is rather sweet.

Birds sometimes pass food directly from one beak to another, and not just a mother to her baby bird.

It's awesome to witness a nature moment like this. Two birds sharing food, or what looks like a kiss to me.

Who knew a backyard bird feeder could be such a romantic place?

Who said fall had to be all about red and orange?

In some parts of Alaska, the mountains are turning gold, the grasses amber, and the evergreens are an even deeper green than last month. Even the browns and grays are beautiful. Every color belongs, and together they're putting on quite a show.

We all move through different seasons, sometimes growing, sometimes changing direction, sometimes just trying to weather whatever comes our way.

Nothing has to stay the way it was forever, and nothing has to look like everything around it.

Besides, who wants to spend an entire lifetime being the same shade of green?

If you build it, they will come.

Apparently, nobody told sandhill cranes that a Field of Dreams was about baseball.

This field is full of cranes wandering around, grabbing a bite, and catching up with the neighbors. Sandhill cranes are very social birds. They gather in large flocks wherever there is lots of food.

Sandhill cranes have been around for millions of years, long before anyone dreamed up baseball, movie theaters, or the idea that every patch of open land needs something built on it.

Maybe that's what makes this field so appealing. Nobody built a thing. They just showed up anyway.

Not everything needs a label.

I don't know what kind of flower this is. I've looked, I've guessed, and I just can't find what it is.

But here's what I do know. It's beautiful, a little unusual, and doing just fine without my knowing its name.

Why do we love labels, anyway? We sort, categorize, and decide where everything belongs, including each other. Sometimes we're so busy figuring out what something is that we forget to appreciate what's right in front of us.

This flower doesn't need my identification to keep blooming.

And neither does anyone else.

How much do we miss simply because we aren't paying attention?

Imagine being this beautiful and having people walk right past you!

A male northern cardinal can turn an ordinary patch of green into something worth stopping for. His brilliant red feathers get their color from carotenoids in his food.

He's just sitting among the leaves, while the rest of the world goes about its business. It makes me wonder how many wonderful things we pass every day without ever knowing they were there.

The world isn't short on things worth seeing; we're just not looking closely enough.

That's the face of someone who's got a lot on their mind.

This Rusty blackbird looks like it's contemplating something terribly important. The meaning of life? The state of the world? Whether that branch is really worth sitting on?

Despite the name, rusty blackbirds aren't always rusty. Their feathers develop rusty-brown edges in fall and winter, giving them a weathered appearance.

Unfortunately, their population has declined dramatically over the past several decades, making them one of North America's fastest-declining songbirds.

So, this little fellow really does have something important to think about.
