I love this quote because it says something I see all the time when creating together.
We don't always need another conversation. Weโre not necessarily looking for advice, explanation, or a cheerful โyouโve got thisโ when weโre clearly running on fumes and caffeine.
Sometimes itโs enough to sit next to someone in silence and simply make something.
While creating mindful art, thereโs room to talk, laugh, and connect, of course. But thereโs also room for quiet. The comfortable kind where nobody expects you to perform, tell your whole story, or come up with the right words for how you feel.
Research in arts and health keeps pointing to something many of us already feel: creative activities can help us focus, express emotions, reduce stress, and feel more connected to others. It makes a lot of sense to me, and I see and feel this every time I create with others.
Thereโs something really beautiful that happens around a table when everyone is working on their own piece of paper. At first, people might chat a little, joke about not knowing what theyโre doing, or announce that they โcanโt drawโ before the pen even touches the page. I hear that one a lot. Itโs practically the unofficial class greeting. ๐
Then slowly, people settle in. Someone gets quiet because theyโre focused on a pattern. Someone else looks over and realizes the person next to them is just as unsure, and that makes everything feel a little easier.
Thatโs the part I love.
Creating together doesnโt require us to have the perfect words. We donโt have to explain why our day wasnโt so great, why weโre tired, or why we needed a break in the first place. We can just sit next to each other, draw lines, choose colors, breathe a little deeper, and let the quiet do its magic.
