Day 20 (2016.02.13): It can be crowded, hot, and steamy when you photograph wrestling, but the rewards are worth it. You can get really dramatic photos along with the literally unusual twists and turns. In the Virginia high school championships they turn off all the lights except for one directly over the mat.

Day 15 (2015.09.11): I've made more football images than I can count, but this is my absolute favorite. Why? Zoom in close, and you'll see that every eye is on that ball. It was the last desperate play of a close game, and a catch would have kept it going for the home team.

Day 13 (2018.03.22): For five years, I've been fortunate to work with the talented teachers and dancers at the Loudoun School of Ballet and the Loudoun Ballet and Performing Arts Company. Their movements are fast, creative, and exquisite, and sometimes I capture them just right.

Day 12 (2005.08.26): If I had to guess I would say that this photo was the one that hooked me on sports photography for good. On a business trip to Colorado Springs, I got a chance to watch and photograph world class cyclists on the velodrome oval. I was captivated by the patterns of light and shadow against the sweep of the track. I was hooked.

Day 7 (2018.12.19): If you've ever been to a wrestling match, you know that the referee has to get really low sometimes so that they can tell if an athlete's shoulders are pinned. This particular referee literally flies around the mat to always be in the best position to make the call.

Hey, everyone! I'll be hosting an online Photography/Camera Q&A on Monday, March 23, 12:00pm (EDT). I thought this might be a good respite from our worries right now, and if this goes well I will do more. This session will be exactly forty minutes long, but if it goes well I will do a longer session the next time.

You'll need the zoom app to join in, and it's available on any platform so please try to set that up ahead of time if possible. If you're using a browser just go to:

https://us04web.zoom.us/j/7523424380

If you're using a Zoom app, the meeting ID is 52 342 4380. I hope to see you then.

Day 6 (2018.03.26): I think it was about 40 degrees when these dedicated athletes pushed off for a practice run. I was in the motorboat with their coach wearing every piece of clothing I had. By the time they got going, they were down to shorts and t-shirts.

Coffee & Camera: Q&A

As a diversion for all of us during this difficult time, I'm going to host an online photography Q&A session on Monday, 12:00 (EDT). This will be my first attempt at this, and I'm hoping to get twenty people to sign up. It's completely free, and all you need to bring is your willingness and your questions. If this works, I will do more in the future. Not just Q&A, but more in depth topics, too.

I hope that you are well and remain healthy during this uncertain time. As many of you know, my photography business is driven largely by youth and high school sports and arts. And, for the time being, there won't be new events to capture. I've been doing this passionately since 2012, and now feels like a good time to go back and review (and share) one of my favorites each day. Enjoy!

Photo 1: Cross country is probably my favorite sport to photograph, and I have found many different ways to capture the essence of the competition. On this course, the runners come down a hill and out of the woods before racing downhill to the finish.

Leesburg, VA (February 27, 2020) - When two teams haven't competed against each other in the regular season, and three are only a few common opponents, it can be a challenge to compare and prepare. But the simple fact that the Millbrook Pioneers and Loudoun County Raiders had made it to the regional...

Leesburg, VA (February 21, 2020) - This is what it's all about: playoff basketball in one of the grand old gyms in the area filled to the rafters with Jungle denizens and riotous Raiders. The arena was so full it seemed almost hard to breathe, and the tension was palpable.

Having just led a class on ISO Sensitivity, this episode of the Washington Post's "In Sight" photography blog is worth reviewing if you want to see what grain/noise looks like in photos. In many of these examples, you can see it very easily, and note that all of these photos were taken before the digital revolution so the noise you see is from the chemical process associated with black and white film. The most important thing to take away is how amazing these photos are despite the existence of noise. In other words, learn the technical fundamentals, use them to your advantage, and always get the shot--even if it involves a sacrifice in quality.

Sterling, VA (February 17, 2020) - The last time the Heritage Pride faced the Dominion Titans, they were served up with a crushing, 72-44, defeat on their home court. The Titans had won their home game against the Pride, too, but the score was a more respectable 78-67.

One of my biggest challenges as an entreprenuer is that I've never been a good self-promoter. But, a chance to be selected Best of Loudoun 2020 is just too great to not go for fully. My business is a finalist, and you can vote for me every day between now and February. Each vote means a lot, and thanks!

It really was a great series on the Exposure Triangle. The folks that attended asked great questions and the whole thing was exciting for me, too. A new series begins at the Ashburn Library on Wednesday, February 5.

We had a packed house for the first of three sessions on Photography Fundamentals last Wednesday evening. We hope you’ll join us this Wednesday, Jan. 22, 7 p.m. for another informative session. Looking forward to seeing you at the library this week!

01/13/2020

Please join me for the first session of a three-part photography workshop on the Exposure Triangle at the Sterling Library on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:00pm. Make a new year's resolution to better understand how to get the most out of your camera. No need to signup, just come and join in.

It's my honor and privilege to photograph the amazing performers in the Loudoun Ballet and Performing Arts Company's annual Nutcracker. It's stunning, from the costumes to the dances and everything in between. You have four more opportunities to see it this year. Twice on Saturday, December 7, and twice on Sunday, December 8, at Loudoun Valley High School. More information at www.lbpac.org.
