Intern Series: My Experience at the 2018 Photoshop World Conference - Tiramisu For Breakfast

My daughter and I attended Photoshop World last month and had a wonderful time. It will be offered two times next year - in Orlando and Las Vegas. If you are curious about whether it would be a good opportunity for you, read my daughter’s review.

In late May, I went to the 2018 Photoshop World Conference in Orlando Florida. This conference is hosted by KelbyOne and is all about photography and design. I attended the conference with my dad since I want to learn more about design, and because he has always loved photography. He has his own pho...

As we approach April 15th (tax day), I would like to pass on a tip for members who are new in the photography business.

TIP: Open up a separate checking account and deposit a portion of every sale into this account to cover both your sales taxes and quarterly taxes- especially if photography is now going to be where most of your income will be coming from.

You can make this deposit on the 1st and 15th of every month so it is easy to implement. Creating this habit will separate your taxes from your regular business account and ensure you are not spending money that is not yours!

Also be HAPPY to be paying taxes- that means you are making sales and getting income. Photography without sales and income is just a hobby!

As a coach I work with many people who are having the issue of “not being able to see the picture because they are in the frame.”
When you continue to do the same things over and over they become habits. Unfortunately some of these habits are killing your business and slowing you down.
Working with a coach will allow you to see things from a different perspective and lead you to creating new, more effective habits that will have a positive effect on your business and life.
A coach will also become your accountability partner who will ensure you do what you say you will do.
If you feel coaching would be a good fit for you, head over to my website www.dougmattice.com to read more about my programs and sign up for a free consultation.
Let me help you go from struggling to success!

It doesn't have to be only on Valentines Day that you get close! Today's tip is to"get close" when taking photographs. When you get closer, you get more interesting images that tell a better story. As you can see on the left, this is your typical amateur snapshot while on vacation. The image on the right has more feeling, is more interesting and helps tell the story of this great actor! So before taking an image ask yourself, "What would this look like if I got in closer to the subject?" Give it a try and watch your photography improve!

So you are walking around a city or town taking in the sites and want to capture them on your DSLR camera. Unless you're shooting an object close up - you probably want to have as much in focus as you reasonably can. So I recommend putting your camera on APERTURE PRIORITY and setting it to f/11. If you focus on something about 1/3 of the way into the scene then you will find your photograph will be in focus from the foreground thru the background. If you want to switch and blur the background because you found an object that is up close, adjust your APERTURE to say 3.5 or 4.0 and you will get a nice blurred background. Happy shooting!

Today's Photography Tip - When doing a portrait of a person what part of the face should you be focusing on? (The cheek, the tip of the nose, their smile?) To get the best focus..... FOCUS on the person's EYES. By shooting at F/11 and focusing on the eyes, this will give you nice sharpness throughout the face and their eyes will be tack sharp! Happy shooting!

Today's tip: If you are photographing a moving object and want to "stop" the motion, then set your shutter speed to 1/500 of a second or faster. That should "freeze" the action for you.
If you can't reach this setting, your ISO may be too low. Try raising it to 400 or 800 and I think you will be good.
Enjoy!

What camera do you use most for taking photos on vacation? Professional SLR? iPhone? Mirror less?

06/14/2016

Today's photo fact: Do you wonder what happens when you press the button to take a picture? Every photo you take is the direct result of the combination of three things known as SHUTTER SPEED, APERTURE, and ISO. Each one controls a single aspect of how the resulting image will look.
The SHUTTER SPEED controls whether you want to stop movement completely or show motion.
The APERTURE controls the quantity of light entering your camera and the depth of field (i.e. whether or not your background is sharp or out of focus).
The ISO measures the cameras sensitivity to light. If you are shooting in bright light, you want a LOW ISO like 100. If you are shooting in low light than you will need a higher ISO number like 1600 or higher.
You may be relieved to know that there's no right or wrong answer when it comes to how to combine these three variables - as long as you get an exposure (picture) you're happy with!

I am considering starting a weekly teleconference call to tackle issues that photographers are facing in their business.
My program is called THRASH 55 and would take place on Wednesday evenings at 7:00. Here is the concept. Each Wednesday we would discuss a particular topic that is challenging us in our photography business. For 55 minutes we will THRASH this topic around and look for ideas that can solve the challenge. Since this would take place on a teleconference line, everyone on the call could share their ideas/solutions.
Each week we would cover a different topic. There would be no cost to you. It is just a neat opportunity to work as a mastermind group that everyone could learn from and would be over in 45 minutes.
So I need two responses from you. 1. Are you interested in participating in this and 2. What topics would you like to be discussed?
If there is enough interest, I will put something together and begin doing this each week starting in July. Over to you...

I am in the beginning stages of rebranding my business. The goal of this page is to talk about photography, show images and offer ways that you can learn photography by taking one of my workshops or courses. I hope over time, this becomes a "go-to" resource for you. Welcome!
