Beautiful surprise to view the northern lights from my home in New Mexico. With all the trouble in the world condensing the past few weeks, from friends towns getting washed away by Helene, to the war in the Middle East, this cosmic moment helped to quell the feeling of planetary stress. While living in British Columbia, it was shared with me that for many Indigenous groups in the north the aurora borealis represents the spirits of their ancestors dancing in the sky. I love seeing them this way, and appreciate the visit last night.

There is something so deeply moving about being in mountains like the Chugach. I’ve never seen peaks like these that rise 6000ft + straight out of the cold waters of the pacific. Soft powder fields and steep spines hang suspended above the valley floors. There is something almost mythic about their presence, and the language they speak is far and away on a different level than I am used to. I feel humbled and grateful to have spent ten days ski mountaineering in the traditional lands of the Sugpiaq peoples around Valdez, Alaska.   Many more reflections to come, but for now I’d like to share some photos and my sincere gratitude to this place, and the friends I shared it with.
