Eris militaris male, bronze jumping spider, on a table at the park on 01JUN2026. He wasn't a big fan of the photo shot, so this was the best shot I could get. Sturgis, Michigan USA.

This should be a juvenile male Eustala cepina, Riparian duncecap orbweaver, on a plant on the far side of the garage. At worst, it's an orbweaver even if my ID isn't correct. Their coloration is wildly variable. I think it's a cool picture. 27MAY2026 in Sturgis, Michigan USA.

Here's the Hentzia mitrata (white-jawed jumping spider) female I met 27MAY2026 at Dallas Lake Park in Wolcottsville, Indiana USA. She was as wild as her male companion (assumedly); she spent a lot of time exploring my camera. They were both on the same fence post, so they were at least friends. She has two black hairs near her anterior lateral eyes, which help make her a cutie 😍

This is a male Hentzia mitrata, white-jawed jumping spider, that I found on a fence post at Dallas Lake Park in Wolcottsville, Indiana USA. These are not my best photos by any stretch. This male was wild. Leaping onto my camera. Leaping onto my hand. Climbing my arm. On my finger. Back on the fence. Back on the camera. Onto my shirt. Onto my phone. It was almost impossible to get him to stop moving. First photo is with my Olympus; second was with my Pixel phone. This is the first male H. mitrata I've ever photographed . They're very distinctive looking, that's for sure. I'll post the female later on. 27MAY2026.

Pholcus phalangioides female with her egg bundle. She's living under the edge of the counter in my bathroom. Long-bodied cellar spiders are always welcome in my living space. There's not many arthropods they can't take down. Sturgis, Michigan USA on 25MAY2026.

Not a spider! This six-spotted tiger beetle (Cicindela sexguttata) let me get close enough for a photo at Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton, Michigan USA. They are voracious predators of almost any arthropod they can subdue. These creatures are almost always skittish around me, so getting up close is always a treat. This one has eight spots (counting the two little dots on the medial elytra), but we'll give it a pass. Variation in spots is normal. 22MAY2026.

Well, it's always fun to come across a new-to-me spider. This is a male Phidippus princeps, the grayish jumping spider. See the long gray hairs on the opisthosoma? That's where that name comes from. The opisthosoma can be anything from red to tan. They have the green chelicerae, too. This guy was very skittish and really didn't want to be a good photo model. Not even sure if this picture is stacked or not. He was on a picnic table at the park. Now that I know male P. princeps are there, I can start looking for the females. Sturgis, Michigan USA on 19MAY2026.

Not a spider, but still an arachnid! I was taking photos at Plumb Lake County Park earlier today 18MAY2026. I found this lady on the playground climbing equipment. She's an American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis). These ticks can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tuleremia, along with other things. I think a lot of people think you only run into ticks in the grass or vegetation, but that's simply not true. So if you, your kids or friends spend time outdoors, whether in the grass or not, I'd recommend you make tick checks a daily practice. Sturgis, Michigan USA.
