I'm so honored to have received this award from the Minnesota Artist Association for my painting, The Golden Earring and the Polkadot Dress!
These were the judges words... Armando Gutierrez thank you,
"The Golden Earring and the Polkadot Dress Look, is a masterful portrait painting. Julianne has rendered this portrait impeccably. I don’t recall too many works on this scale to be so well defined and skillfully finished. Vermeer comes to mind.
The bistre painting allows for a concentration of values to create ones’ imagery.
It allows for your forms to be developed without the complexity of color use and/or a limited color palette. This method historically was used during the 17th and 18th century dating back to the Middle ages and Renaissance. Sorry, enough of the art history reference.
JuliAnne, I must honestly say I’m not as familiar with the cold wax application method, so I can’t speak about how that is applied within the process. This portrait shows a great connection between subject and artist, in this case this child. The perseverance of artistry is exemplary modeling of the capturing the forms while being proficient of the overall application of her mediums.
The focus of this work is the subject with the choice of a decorative background to compliment the overall vision and not to take away of the artists intention of what the viewer should be focused on which is the beauty and admiration of the child. I also really like the expression selected for the portrait in her formal spontaneous moment, wearing her golden earring dressed in her polka dot dress!
Stunning, Thank You and congratulations on this work! JuliAnne"
