Please keep your pets inside for the next few days... short leash walks for elimination purposes only. Have lots of fresh water available too! Heat stroke can happen in minutes.

Summer is finally here!

While you’re having fun in the sun, here are some tips to keep your pet safe in the heat:

Everyone knows not to leave your animal in a car, but not everyone thinks about the other potential dangers right under our noses. Be conscious of walking on pavement or asphalt on hot days; we don’t want burnt paws! A good test is to put your hand on the ground and hold it for 5 seconds. If you can’t comfortably hold it in place, it's not safe for your dog to walk on.

Always carry water with you when you leave the house with your pet. Not only do YOU need to stay hydrated, but your furry friend does, as well! Collapsible bowls and pet-specific water bottles are great portable options for when you’re out-and-about.

Recognizing heat stroke in animals is critical during these harsh summer months. It's important to never leave an animal outside longer than 30 minutes and they should be supervised, making sure they have access to shelter/shade and water. Signs of heat stroke in cats and dogs are excessive panting, drooling, bright red gums/tongue, vomiting, lethargy and even collapse or seizures.
