Around noon today, AFD responded to an unknown hazmat incident at an office building downtown after an unknown powder was discovered in a letter. Unified command was established with law enforcement resources and after a short investigation, the hazard was unfounded. No further info is available. Batt-1, Engine-2, Truck-1, Hazmat-1, & Medic-81 responded.

Not much happening on the fire side in the Municipality this weekend, so last night I ventured up north toward Sutton to take a shot at capturing some star trails. I began my exposures around 1am, and was very pleasantly suprised was an unexpected aurora substorm about 30 minutes later. Notice the North Star in the top left, as everything rotates around it. This is NOT AI, it is approximately 500 five second exposures edited in Lightroom and blended together in an astro program called StarStax. I can go into more detail about how this was made if anyone is curious.

At 11:46pm last night, Engine-1 was dispatched to a reported fire alarm at the Hilton hotel on 3rd Ave in downtown. Upon arriving and making their way to the 22nd floor, Engine-1 requested a full structure fire response after coming across a large amount of heat around a maintenance closet. Additional arriving units began establishing water supply, bringing handlines to the area of the potential fire floor, and assisting in the evacuation of the large building. After an extensive search and investigation, and with steam visible, crews began to suspect a water heater issue. Working with building maintenance, crews made access to the walls and confirmed the culprit was a broken boiler/water pipe, and units began to be released from the scene.

ALS-1, Batt-1, Batt-2, Safety-1, Engine-1, Engine-2, Engine-3, Engine-5, Truck-1, Truck-5, Rescue-4, Medic-1, Medic-81, & Medic-82 responded.

AFD is on scene of what was a fire alarm and got upgraded to a possible structure fire at the Hilton on 3rd. The incident has been isolated to a water heater/pipe issue, and units are clearing. Photos to come.

At 5:30pm this evening, Chugiak Volunteer Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire near the corner of Henkins Rd & Alderberry Ln, off the Old Glenn. APD was on scene reporting a shop fire, and as units approached and caught sight of a large column of smoke, the Chugiak all-call was broadcast. Arriving units reported a working fire in a 25x100 shop/garage, with am******on actively cooking off and firing. Anchorage FD was requested to assist with a water tender to the scene and an engine at the nearest hydrant to assist with filling trucks. The majority of the flames were knocked down quickly, and crews remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hotspots and mopping up. Chief-31, Chief-33, Captain-3, ALS-31, Engine-33, Tender-31, Tender-32, Tender-33, Rescue-33, Medic-31, Medic-35, Utility-32, Engine-11, & Tender-11 responded.
