I shared a film a few weeks ago of sweet and spunky Mikki - who also happens to the be daughter of a teacher one of my own girls' had in elementary school. Mikki's film was submitted to my filming academy as well for our bimonthly challenge. Every two months we are given a theme or prompt to create a film around. For Sept/Oct the prompt was color. And boy does Mikki tell us about color in this film! I am extremely excited to share the film was chosen as a top 3 film and a staff pick for this challenge! In this blog post you can see the other top two films, and some honorable mentions as well. Watching these films can really hit home just how powerful capturing life in this way can be. Maybe it will spark an idea of something you would like to capture? Reach out to me if it does! And thank you Monica Fitch Broome, for sharing your Mikki with me! (if you missed the film of Mikki, head to the blog post to watch it or scroll down a post on my own page!)

What exactly is a Family Film? A Moving Portrait? A Senior Portrait Film? Over the next weeks and months stick right here on this page with me and I'll show you! Today, meet Mikki! She is a beautiful, fun, spirited 5 year old who is 100% fearless. When we started her filming, she was rightfully nervous about jumping from one stone block to the other, but by the end of our time together - she was not only jumping them, but doing it by herself! Listen and watch as Mikki tells us about her favorite color, and you will most definitely hear and feel the love she has for her momma ❤️ . This is a Moving Portrait Film of a 5 year old in all her 5 year old fantasticness!

My journey back to this page on Facebook, which was once my photography page, is really an act which has been a full year in the making. Just over a year ago I joined Filming Life Academy. Photography has been a part of me since childhood when I got my first camera for Christmas. And I can remember saving up for my first serious Canon film camera I bought in the early 1990's, which cost me over $500 and was not a purchase I made lightly. Along the way I bought more cameras and gear, took classes and worked on my photography. And once I had children I had daily, if not hourly inspiration some days, to press my photography and feel my way though motherhood with my images by my side. But along with photos, and the gentle nudging of my husband, I also took video here and there.

After one of our moves, I stared down into a box that contained tiny little tapes from the early days of our marriage and birth of our children. I had one of those mini camcorders back then. But we could no longer view the tapes. As a Christmas gift to us almost three years ago, I purchased one of those kits from a service that would digitize old tapes. By the time I rounded everything up and sent it off, it was Mother's Day by the time they arrived back on our doorstep. Watching those little clips of video was like opening tiny doors in my heart I forgot were there as I not only saw our family, but listened to the voices and to all the things that were swirling around us at all those stages in life.

Around that same time, I discovered Courtney Holmes. And I watched one of her family films. Before I knew it, I was tearing up. I was watching complete strangers and I was tearing up. I looked at my camera in a new way from that day on.

I stayed connected with Courtney and even took an online class from her, but eventually Courtney founded The Filming Life Academy which now has three incredible lead educators (Courtney, Kylie Purtell, and Allison Redmon) surrounded by other supporting educators and an entire community of photographers like me talking the world by storm using their cameras to tell stories and capture life in film. The academy offers both education and support, and after creating my most recent film in the academy (which I posted here a few days ago), I decided to start my business again - but this time as a photo and film business! I wouldn't be doing this if it had not been for me finding and joining the academy. Here is a look back at the very first film I made back when I took the class with Courtney right before she started the academy. And stick with this page as I begin to post films I will be crafting as Forza Foto & Film!

It takes only a tiny movement of the scroll wheel to see that I have not been on this page in quite some time. Did my camera break? No. Did all 10 of fingers break? Nope. Did I leave photography? Well ... no. I will never "leave" photography. But I have decided to broaden my horizons and jump from photography into the world of filmmaking! So things were quiet around the walls of this page as I spent time learning film and eventually joining a film academy, academy.

One of the biggest fans of my photography (which happens to be my husband ☺️) would make comments here and there encouraging me, when we were at events or doing things as a family, to "take some video too." Photos are great, and I will always love photography, but what he was telling me as a husband and a father was he wants to look back later and not just "see" what we were doing, but hear it too. So I tried to be more mindful of taking video too. But I found that while those little video clips were great, they just got lost. They felt like little disjointed snippits. Then one day I saw a FILM created by Courtney Holmes. That was it. I knew I was changing gears. I NEEDED to make films. I have been working behind the scenes to learn filming and to define where I want to take them. Soon I will have some films to post here! But in the meantime, you can take a look at a film I made for an assignment in the Academy. Stick with me right here kids, soon you will understand what I mean when I say films, and I guarantee you will fall in love like I did.

There was that one Halloween when my little mummy was so cold I had to carry her home, her hands tucked in my shirt to warm them as I swiped chilly tears from cheeks. Or the year when we woke up to snow the day before Halloween! And I will never forget the Halloween both girls were in costumes made out of cardboard boxes trick-or-treating in driving rain and 40 degree temps. Then there was this. This ... the glorious first Halloween in Texas. Ahhhh. We laughed, we danced, we sang while trick-or-treating. Actually, we were just glad to be alive having been rear-ended on our way to our friends' house. Halloween has a way of making a grand impression on us nearly every year! Have a safe and happy Halloween!

In just the past two months this kid has scored goals in soccer, scored points in football, been named the MVP defensive player of the game for the same football team, was moved to the higher age bracket in JiuJitsu becoming the youngest sparrer in the class, was just promoted to a grey belt in JiuJitsu, and math is the subject this kid excels at in school. And this same kid just wore a sparkly blue dress with heals to school earlier this week. This kid is a girl. She is my daughter. For her "girl" identifies her but it does not define her. She defines herself. She goes out and does things not based on what a girl should or should not do, but based on what she as an individual should or should not do. It is based on her interests and her strengths. It's not based on a category others have placed her into. I admire my daughter, and I think she has a lot to teach this world.

My neighbor. She is so funny. "Oh, I'm not very crafty" she says as she turns her head to the side and waves her hand in front of her face giving the impression that I am just plain silly. She tells me this all the time. But then things like this happen. These are the two characters I have been sharing the bus stop with the past few weeks. Not crafty my left foot I say.

I need only one hand to provide enough fingers needed to count the number of rainy days we have had in the past 5 months. And then just like that over the weekend, we were blasted with rain. We had over 6 inches race down on us, with areas near us getting over 13. Weather like that is bound to bring chaos. But as I walked to the bus this morning with my daughter, every trace of the storm was evaporated from the sky. The damage left behind is not quite as quick to respond. Keeping dear friends in our thoughts and hoping some light will enter their hearts.

Two important lessons were learned that day. One, the youngest will never take anything but the inside seat again on The Scrambler. And two, I think my nephew will refuse to go on any more rides when I have my camera along.
