Smiles & Joy! What holds humanity together

They had just returned from the edge of space… and the first thing they did was smile.

After days inside the Orion spacecraft, traveling farther than any human crew in decades, the Artemis II astronauts finally made their way back to Earth. Their journey ended not with silence, but with the thunder of the ocean as their capsule splashed down safely into the sea.

Waiting for them was the massive deck of the USS John P. Murtha — a ship prepared for this exact moment.

As the hatch opened, fresh air rushed in. Hands reached out. One by one, the astronauts were carefully lifted from the spacecraft they had trusted with their lives. Their movements were slow, but their faces said everything.

Relief. Pride. Joy.

Still wearing their bright orange flight suits, they were helped onto the deck — and that’s when the moment became unforgettable.

They smiled.
