Good evening everyone! I've been working on a special personal project. It's a special photo montage of John Cleary - my father-in-law, a father, a grandfather, and a husband. I want to share a memory and a story behind the photos that comprise this montage.
I'll start with the photo in the center. John and I were upstairs in their attic looking for the 35mm slides he had taken during his army days in the early 1960's. The plan was that I would scan them and, someday, have John tell me the stories behind them. After a few minutes of rummaging around, we found the green metal box that had all his slides neatly organized inside. We also found his army boot camp "yearbook". We sat down on the bed nearby and he opened it up. He told me some army stories and how his mother had made notes in the book. John wanted me to have his slide projector -- it was an antique Bell and Howell slide projector! While searching for the slide projector, we came across John's dress army hat. He smiled and wondered aloud whether it still fit. He put it on his head and said "Well, I guess it still fits!". I asked him if I could take his picture. He agreed and I took out my iPhone and snapped that picture. Little did I know that it would be the last picture I would take of him.
Now, the remaining photos are the pictures that John had taken while stationed in Fort Hood, TX. The lower left photo is John standing by his car. He was on a trip to Padre Island with his army buddies. The photo on the lower right is John in his green fatigues. The final photo is a picture he had taken of the base headquarters.
Scanning the slides (about 200) and working on this montage brought back many fond memories, a few tears, some smiles and even an audible laugh.
I hope you enjoyed the story behind this montage.
Thanks.
