Day 5:
“When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!”― Ted Grant
Fetterman's Lesson.
i was thirty miles out side of boulder city, when my client called. She ask if had time to photograph one more person, Ken Fetterman. I thought.. 'f**k, im running late, 30 miles out of town and will never make it home' and then my mouth opened and out came "Sure, i can be there in 30 mins" Shaking the stunn from my realization i turned arround, and went back to the home. I walked in and here was this frail shadow of a man waiting on me to take his picture for the book.
As i edited the images and laid out the poster, i was drawn to his picture. Something about it.. captivated me. In final prep for the proof copy, i sent the client a list of the names for her to proof. no sooner than i hit send.. and my phone rang, it was the client. as we spoke, i coild hear a nervousness in her voice.. almost a hesitant crackle. then she asked.. "Is Ken Ketterman in the book?" i gleefully answered yes, and the there was a pause.. followed by.. I wanted you to know.. He passed last night, and all he talked about the last week was that he was going to be in a book.
Then it dawned on me had I not turned around.. ... I took his last image.
Unannounced to me, last week when i was unveiling the images, the book and story of the subject, i reveled his image. As my eyes shifted from the easel back to the audience i noticed a lady she had start to cry. I looked in to her eyes, she mouthed.. "Thank you, that is my dad" and then my tears started to flow.
So, Ken, my friend I thank you.
humbly.
