Driving toward Monument Valley, I spotted a handmade sign that read, “Cowboy Up for Christ Horse Race”.

A few miles down a dirt road, I found myself at the Whitehorse race track for the 19th annual event. There I met Nate Whitehorse, who spent many years as a Lutheran pastor before starting Cowboy Up for Christ, a ministry that serves cowboys, horse racers, and their families.

Another unexpected stop that became one of the highlights of the trip.

On my way to Monument Valley, I stopped in Kayenta for gas where I learned there was a rodeo that evening.

It was my first rodeo. After I arrived, I was invited behind the chutes, where I spent the evening photographing the competitors, listening to stories about life in the Navajo Nation, and hearing much of the event announced in Navajo. It was an opportunity to step into a tradition and culture that was entirely new to me, and one I’ll remember just as much as the photographs themselves.
