For some reason, I’ve taken an abnormal amount of photos while gassing up my car. There’s always a few minutes to look around, and having a camera on me usually leads to something worth photographing.

I’ve always found myself drawn to working within constraints. Old cameras that barely function, lenses that don’t quite fit, or setups that feel a little out of place. This was one of those moments. Shooting a 28mm at a drifting event isn’t the obvious choice, but it forced me to lean into the foreground and think differently about how the scene came together.

I attended my first drifting event this past weekend at the Jackson Speedway. Cars sliding through corners just inches apart, tires constantly screaming, everything louder (and better) than I expected. Shooting a majority on film, I was not quite sure what would turn out. It ended up being one of the most fun times I’ve had with a camera, even as I went home covered in tire rubber.
