Our Texas roots run generations-deep and our belief in a better Texas runs even deeper!

I’m grateful to Beto O'Rourke, who is running for Texas governor, for joining me on today’s special dual “Dare to Lead”/“Unlocking Us” crossover podcast episode—and for his willingness to be vulnerable and not shy away from some hard questions around power, dehumanization, sensible gun reform, and women’s rights.

I think you’ll find this conversation interesting and relevant no matter where you call home. And whether you agree or disagree with Beto’s position on things, he’s a strong leader with a different approach—and I respect the authenticity.

At the heart of our Dare to Lead work is the belief that “who you are is how you lead.” I think we get a really good picture of Beto in this conversation.

One part of my job FaithWorks of Abilene is to share stories. Stories of people who need a little help getting to the next step in their lives. Sometimes people just hit a roadblock, maybe because of past trauma, a lot of time because of past trauma, and they haven't developed the skills to move out of a dark place. FaithWorks does an amazing job of walking with, not catering to, but helping the person become the one who takes responsibility for their own life, sharing insights and tools of how to make the next step. Today as I drove to work I saw a man who was a FaithWorks student, he was working in a job with a smile on his face, so proud to have a job. He had wanted to work, but during incarceration his identifications were lost. He had no ID, no birth certificate, he was truly alone in the world, with no proof of who he was. The people here have helped him in so many ways. As of last Friday, he has I.D., He started work on Sunday, today was his second day. He will be able to pay for a roof over his head now, he can buy food, while his dignity was never in question, the way he feels about himself ... he is standing taller today. Join us in our mission to help the underemployed find their way.

This was pretty fun to watch. What many of us take for granted because we had a village around us to show us the way, there are so many who had no village. FaithWorks helps fill in the gaps.

Thomas! HSU Grad!!

Thomas is graduating from HSU and heading to Harding for PT Grad School. There are lots of adventures ahead, Thomas makes the world a better place, he is such a great young man.
