For our final portion of Bosnia and Herzegovina we headed to the mountains to drive through Sutjeska National Park, with lots of rocky outcropping mountains and landscapes. We then descended a bit from the mountains to visit the Tjentiste War Memorial in the "Valley of Heroes", an interesting monument with "warring psychedelic crags commemorat[ing] an unsuccessful military operation" (Atlas Obscura). From there we headed through some small mountain villages to make our way towards our next country in our travels, Montenegro (in next album)...

Bosnia and Herzegovina continued to be a place that we were pleasantly surprised by with incredibly lovely and friendly people. This surprised us even more when we got to Sarajevo, a big and busy city embedded in a valley, with steep hills and unfortunately a layer of smog that couldn't quite escape, and plenty of signs of the unfortunate war that took place in the early 1990s still remaining. This unfortunate history and the tougher layers of this city did not seem to harden the people too much though; we felt a nice, friendly and open vibe there as well.

We only spent a day there but learned SO much. From walking the streets and seeing historic sites like where the event that sparked WWI started, to visiting the old mosque and its associated and important historical buildings, to going to the Children of War museum, a deeply impactful exhibition of items and stories from some of the children that have had to experience war firsthand; an exhibition that really stood out from other museums we have been to and one that I know will sit with us forever.

Sarajevo has left an indelible mark on us, beyond our expectations...there is a lot of information in this album but I hope you may find it as interesting as we did:

Overland travel is a wonderful experience for all the things we get to see and do but what makes it extra special is meeting and spending time with others doing the same, especially since we connect with each other in ways others may not fully comprehend. It also helps us fight some of the feelings of missing other friends and family and not feeling quite so alone on our journeys…we’re grateful to meet great, friendly people on the road and even better when we can share a meal, a campfire, a hike, or other great experience! Thanks to all our road friends, new and old! Here are a few from our more recent time in Turkey and Georgia

Toby found a 4x4 road he wanted to drive that would lead to a beautiful spot in the mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina, an area called Tisovica. It is an area for hikers and campers in the summertime but the little mountain lodge/refuge that was out there was closed at that time of year and other than a few logging trucks seen at the very start of the drive, we saw no one else out there. The road itself only had a few spots that were really "4x4"/"technical", the rest of it was just more rocky, bumpy dirt road that meant the camper got swaying too much if going more than a crawl. There were also lots of switchbacks and in the end, it all made the drive sooo much longer than we initially thought and perhaps more physically and mentally taxing as well. Had we known, we would have prepared to stay a few nights to make it more worthwhile, however we didn't have much food or water with us, wanting to not carry that extra weight...In the end though, despite the extra work involved, it was indeed beautiful and we did enjoy our time up there, only wishing we had more time to enjoy it...ah well...after we made our way down, we headed for the little town of Konjic on the Neretva River with a lovely restored Ottoman stone bridge and sweet charm to it all. We were definitely continuing to really enjoy our time in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia and Herzegovina was a name we knew from hearing it in the news when we were young because of the Bosnian War which took place from 1992 to 1995 but we didn't know much more about it. Arriving at the mechanics, we were greeted by very friendly locals. We would come to find out this was the general spirit of the locals, quite noticeably "SO nice" (how we kept describing them). Old Town Mostar was an absolutely lovely, charming, and indeed old town that wow'ed us at every turn. Such an absolutely pleasant start to this welcoming and beautiful country!

For our second portion of Croatia, we drove up into the Velebit Mountains, driving in the Tulove Grede rock mountain area which had some fantastic rocky landscapes. We also stopped at the St Francis's Church, built in 1832 which sits up there beside the ruins of a 19th-century imperial traveler's station built by the Austrian Empire in the Jasenice Panoramic area. Despite it being incredibly picturesque, it was unfortunately not the time of year to be spending too much time or trying to camp there as it was both incredibly windy and quite cold up there, so we did a little exploring but continued on (plus of course there was that ever looming concern that we supposedly couldn't wild camp in Croatia). That evening we did camp at a boon-docking spot known in the community as a permissible spot to free camp, on the Öffentlicher strand beach camp spot near Šibenik, a lovely spot to stay the night before heading to Dubrovnik. Having been fans of the Game of Thrones series when it was being aired and finding out then that Dubrovnik was a filming location for many scenes in the show, we had had it on a travel "bucket list" for some time (well before our overlander days). It was exciting to get to finally visit it, although the show has indeed made it a popular tourist destination, with many people on Game of Thrones tours around the old town. Despite that, it was a lovely old city and understandable filming location. We also happened to arrive completely by coincidence on the evening of the Lumiart Light Festival, a completely unexpected addition to our visit there.

We had wanted to visit Croatia for some time (admittedly, Game of Thrones sparked our interest many years ago when we found out so many filming locations we set there). Unfortunately for us and our mode of travel, Croatia's popularity has meant that they have made restrictions on wild camping/boon docking, wanting people to only use paid campgrounds which are not exactly cheap. We mostly free camp in order to afford our full-time life on the road so this newer set of rules on us really restricted what we could see and do. We did manage a few free spots, hiding out in the mountains or staying in places that have become known in the community as permissible places for example, but it was something we were always nervous about and thus didn't actually end up spending all that much time there in the end...in this set of photos we did get to visit the very lovely Plitvice Lakes National Park with beautiful blue waters and lots of waterfalls, even though it was clearly not the best time of year to visit it as the falls were more trickles compared to what they are like in the spring/early summer, still beautiful though. We also visited a classic stop on the overlander tour, the Željava Airbase with its abandoned DC47 aircraft and the former Yugoslav underground bunker complex.

Nestled in the bottom of Slovenia along the coast is a final portion of Italy called Trieste. Needing a part we couldn't get in Slovenia or going forward and being able to order it to an Amazon locker in Italy, plus wanting any excuse to visit Italy again after getting to know it so well over our time there, we opted for a quick stop over before heading to Croatia. We had a nice evening wandering the town and really enjoyed grocery shopping the next day before leaving, getting to get some yummy treats again that we had enjoyed before (Italian gorgonzola and stracciatella cheese is truly unlike anywhere else we've been).
