Salem Ben Yaala Capturing moments and sceneries through photography has been my passion since I was a kid.

Looking back to old photographs and feeling the nostalgia is mostly why I shoot. In other words, I capture the present to recall the past when I'm in the future.

In 2024, and over the years, ’ve returned to Djerba to visit family and friends, photographing the same familiar people and places. At first glance, the images may seem repetitive, but in the details, they reveal a story of change.

This ongoing work is deeply personal—a reflection of my version of Djerba, seen through the lens of my connection to the island. But Djerba is far more than my experience. It’s a place with stories, perspectives, and layers that extend far beyond what I can capture.

2023 was a prolific year for documenting Djerba, even as it unfolded during some of life’s most difficult moments. I visited three times, including an unexpected and heartbreaking trip to bid farewell to my father. Later, I returned to ease the weight of grief with fresher, more hopeful memories.
Over the years, documenting the passage of time has become central to my practice. Djerba remains a place of constant paradox—a place where so much seems to change, yet so much feels like it never does.

Visiting Djerba in 2022 felt like a breath of fresh air. The pandemic already seemed like a distant memory, and normalcy had returned. It was both comforting and unsettling, especially as the rest of the world remained caution.

2019 Part 1/2
Although I snapped fewer photos per year, I found myself increasingly satisfied with each shot. It’s a humbling trend that I’m grateful for.

2017 wasn’t a great year for photography, so we’re fast-forwarding to 2018—a great year. It was the first time I took the time to photograph a wedding and not be the cousin who took pictures for the wedding. I used the same shutter button but with a very different intent.

A year later! I’m finally resuming this photographic retrospective of Djerba. 2015 wasn’t a fruitful year, so we’re skipping ahead to 2016—a year full of happy events but little I am comfortable to share.
