Thailand and Malaysia Expand Cross-Border Train Tourism with “MySawasdee” Service in December

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has successfully completed a trial run of the new “MySawasdee” international train service, operated in partnership with Malaysia’s KTMB (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad). The test took place between Padang Besar and Surat Thani from 21–23 September 2025 and ran smoothly, marking an important step toward enhancing rail-based tourism and strengthening cultural and economic ties between the two countries.

Veeris Ammarapala, Governor of the SRT, explained that this collaboration stems from the 42nd KTMB–SRT Joint Conference in 2024, where both sides agreed to extend the “MySawasdee” route beyond Hat Yai Junction to Surat Thani, opening the way for tourists from Malaysia, Thailand, and beyond to reach Thailand’s southern provinces more easily. During the 43rd Joint Conference in August 2025, both parties agreed that regular service could begin by December 2025.

Technical Trial Run

The trial train, hauled by an SRT QSY locomotive, ran the full Surat Thani – Kuala Lumpur route and back, focusing on safety checks such as platform clearance, wheel and carriage alignment, and braking systems.

The consist included:
• 1 Power Car (PGC)
• 1 Café Car (air-conditioned dining service)
• 3 Second-Class Air-Conditioned Coaches (ASC, 60 seats each)
• 3 Second-Class Sleeper Coaches (ADNS, 40 berths each)
• 3 First-Class Air-Conditioned Coaches (AFC, 36 seats each)
• 1 Event Car (36 seats, with space for activities)
• 1 Chillax Car (lounge and leisure space)

In addition, KTMB will soon conduct a test run between Krung Thep Aphiwat Station in Bangkok and Butterworth, using three trial coaches (one power car and two passenger cars) to ensure readiness for future cross-border operations.

Boost for Tourism and Regional Links

The extension of the “MySawasdee” service to Surat Thani will not only provide a comfortable new option for travelers heading to southern Thailand’s islands and cultural destinations but also strengthen tourism flows between Thailand and Malaysia. SRT highlights this as a way to add economic value while promoting cultural exchange and friendship.

In short: by the end of 2025, you could board a train in Malaysia, cross into Thailand, and continue all the way to Surat Thani—with through service connecting directly to ferries for Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao.
