SARDINAS SA IBANG BANSA
Doesn’t mean I’m already abroad, I’m not eating sardinas anymore. There are days that I still missed the comfort of home and the slow paced, simple day to day encounters of life. I missed each humble daily beginnings, the not-so-chaotic start of each day at work where you can still hold a cup of coffee and munch on something before actually starting your routines, and the end of shift tiredness but going home to a good meal set at the table. They say, money is not easy to earn at home but who said money is easier to earn abroad too? I may eat sardinas now due to missing the homey vibe it brings but beyond that is a deeper reason: I’m tired and don’t have the energy to even prepare myself a good meal; I have no one here to prepare me a good meal; and I’d rather rest and sleep than cook myself a meal.
You will never understand the longing, the sacrifices and the hardwork unless you’ve been in the situation yourself. So the next time you ask someone abroad for money and they weren’t able to spare some for you, don’t take it to heart. Remember, they have a budget to prioritize, a family to support, and bills to pay. They didn’t work abroad to support the whole clan, they work because they have their own dreams and goals too.
For some, a can of sardines maybe just to cure homesickness. But who knows, for some Filipino workers abroad, a can of sardines maybe a way to survive too.
Be compassionate and understanding. ♥️
