Birds are our compass. Wetlands are the map. 🗺️

This World Wetlands Day, we celebrate the theme 'Wetlands and traditional knowledge: celebrating cultural heritage', highlighting the long-standing connections between people, birds and water that have sustained wetland systems over generations. 🌍

Wetlands are among the planet’s most productive ecosystems. They store carbon, reduce flood risk, support livelihoods and provide vital habitat for waterbirds migrating along global flyways.

But they are disappearing faster than any other ecosystem, putting biodiversity and the generational practices tied to these places at risk. 🐦

Across the BirdLife Partnership, we work where wetlands are lived in and relied upon, bringing scientific evidence together with knowledge shaped by generations of close observation.

Birds guide our work, revealing where wetlands are healthy, where they are under pressure, and where action can make the greatest difference. 🌿

From community-led restoration to the revival of ancient stewardship systems, traditional knowledge is shaping conservation action today, helping wetlands, birds and people thrive together. 💧

Grasslands are one of the world’s most overlooked ecosystems.🌾

They are the home and lifeline for communities everywhere: pastoralists, small farmers and the millions relying on these landscapes for food. They sustain biodiversity, water cycles, and carbon storage, yet they remain among the least protected landscapes.🕊️

As the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 unfolds, we’re shining a light on what’s at stake. Migratory birds depend on healthy grasslands and when these habitats are lost, entire species are pushed closer to extinction. 🐦

Across the BirdLife Partnership, conservation is happening hand in hand with communities. From sustainable ranching to steppe and wetland restoration, local knowledge and leadership are delivering real, lasting results. 🌱

This year is a rallying point. We’re elevating the grassland narrative, amplifying pastoralist voices, unlocking funding and building alliances to secure these landscapes for birds and people alike. 🤝
