Birds are our compass. Wetlands are the map. 🗺️
This World Wetlands Day, we celebrate the theme 'Wetlands and traditional knowledge: celebrating cultural heritage', highlighting the long-standing connections between people, birds and water that have sustained wetland systems over generations. 🌍
Wetlands are among the planet’s most productive ecosystems. They store carbon, reduce flood risk, support livelihoods and provide vital habitat for waterbirds migrating along global flyways.
But they are disappearing faster than any other ecosystem, putting biodiversity and the generational practices tied to these places at risk. 🐦
Across the BirdLife Partnership, we work where wetlands are lived in and relied upon, bringing scientific evidence together with knowledge shaped by generations of close observation.
Birds guide our work, revealing where wetlands are healthy, where they are under pressure, and where action can make the greatest difference. 🌿
From community-led restoration to the revival of ancient stewardship systems, traditional knowledge is shaping conservation action today, helping wetlands, birds and people thrive together. 💧
