During our recent family vacation to California, we made a visit to Dana Point, trademarked as the Dolphin and Whale Watching Capital of the World. I’ve been on cruises before, but the one here was truly an amazing experience! We were treated to spectacular sights of hundreds of common dolphins speeding through the waters. The energetic dolphins were performing high flying acrobatic leaps out of the water, showing off their beautiful hourglass patterns. Here is a photograph I took that afternoon, hopefully giving you a glimpse of our adventure. Shot using a Nikon Z9, AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR. 1/2000 sec, f/10, iso 1000, at 210mm.

An Indian wild-ass at sunset, exhibiting the Flehmen response. I took this photograph at the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary in Little Rann of Kutch in the Gujarat state of India. A portrait shot of a juvenile Long-tailed Macaque taken in Kinabatangan, Borneo. There was a large group of young ones playing and jumping on a fallen tree trunk by the river side. My long lens must have caught this guy’s attention and he put his play time on pause to check us out.

Weighing in at up to 1 ton, the Indian Gaur does not hesitate to take on even a full grown tiger if the need arises. Got this frame filling shot in portrait orientation as one of them approached close to our vehicle.

We were following a male leopard on our jeep when we realised there was a female leopard right behind us! We had inadvertently driven right in between the couple. Imagine being sandwiched between two leopards!!! Very lucky encounter for us. Here's a picture of the female leopard looking us in the eye before she disappeared into the bushes.

We were delighted to hear alarm calls from deer nearby, within minutes of a close encounter with a leopard. 'Probably a tiger, based on the way the leopard was scurrying away' said our experienced driver as he raced towards the calls. The next minute, this tiger walked out of the bushes and crossed the path right in between our jeep and another. Shutters were firing all around us but the tiger didn't even look up to see us. All over in 3 minutes!

Had a wonderful trip to Nagarahole National Park in late January this year. On our second day, we were thrilled to encounter this herd of elephants approaching us. The late afternoon sun lit them up quite nicely from the side as they made their way through the forest. The park has a large population of Asian elephants and the abundance of grass growing along the banks of the Kabini River attracts wild elephants throughout the year.
