Hornbills are known to mate for life.
So, when news got out about an alleged poisoning of a pair of Oriental hornbills, it was especially heartbreaking to learn that only one survived. ๐
The poison may not have been intended for them, but regardless, the cruelty of poisoning any animal cannot be ignored. The pain this lone survivor must endure, separated from his/her lifelong companion, is a silent tragedy that many of us will fail to fully grasp.
There are more humane and effective ways to manage wildlife in an area without resorting to harm. If pigeons or other animals are unwelcome in a space, itโs far better to remove their food sources and ensure the area is free of waste, particularly food scraps. Animals seek the basics to survive: food, shelter, and a safe place to raise their young.
By making small changes, such as modifying fixtures to deter wildlife or keeping our spaces cleaner, we can foster better coexistence with animals of all kinds. Letโs take responsibility for our actions and protect the wildlife that call Singapore home too.
