Is This Home, Truly?

Global Media spaces have predominatly been occupied by western narratives. In the case of Singapore, the award-winning Hollywood movie Crazy Rich Asians has created a 'lux' facade that shrouds the country. While this caricature of Singapore may leave positive impressions of the country in the minds of some, it can also create distance for others.

Is This Home, Truly? seeks to break this one-note caricature by diversifying the narratives surrounding Singaporeans through the explorations of those living in the UK. Discussions about their identity with conversations around their reasons to connect/ disconnect with home seeks to shed some light on what it means to be Singaporean.

Why do people choose to connect and disconnect with home? Is This Home, Truly? explores the relationship overseas Singaporeans have with the island nation, questioning what is the Singaporean identity, as part of the group exhibition currently on til 6pm today

Split Personalities

After trying on the many different gay stereotypes, I now have three possible alter egos. These identities are in the process of reduction into a singular being and while they are all possible variations maybe across multiple multiverses, I don’t really see myself in any of these personalities. Does that mean I’m not gay?

T***k on the Street

How then would t***ks look in public spaces? I superimpose myself dressed in my t***k ensemble onto the streets of London at the award-winning gay bar, Ku Bar located by Chinatown on 24 Jan 2023. T***ks are known to stereotypically frequent gay events like RuPaul’s Drag Con and spaces such as gay bars and clubs. However, do you need to play into these stereotypes to be considered a t***k?

A T***k’s Wardrobe

A recreation of what a stereotypical t***k’s ensemble would look like, taken on 11 Jan 2023. Based on an online survey conducted coupled with my interpretation, I picked out what a t***k’s go-to look would be which includes a white t-shirt, a pair of light-washed straight-cut denim jeans, a white thong, a pair of white socks, a cream-coloured tote bag from RuPaul’s Drag Con 2023, a silver bangle, and a white high-cut Converse shoe.

Trying on T***k

In the process of exploring what entails a t***k, I photograph myself in the stereotypical t***k ensemble. In the online survey, respondents mentioned a stereotypical t***k “would wear light-wash denim... have very naturalist hair, a tight-fitting white t-shirt, high socks maybe, and not tank tops”, are “bespectacled”, and are also “more lively and energetic, have higher pitched voices and are more flamboyant”.

Bearings of a Bear

I bring the bear ensemble to the studio. In the online survey, respondents said they think bears “wear white wifebeaters, flannel shirt, jeans, timberland boots”, “give off... (an) intimidating but soft personality” and are “down-to-earth... nice persons”.

Leather and Skin

What would leather men look like in public? I photographed myself outside the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, one of the many local gay pubs known for holding fe**sh events. These pubs host fe**sh events regularly, acting as safe spaces for people to explore their kinks in an open environment. While some may disagree with this “lifestyle”, it is not morally wrong to explore one’s kinks. Leather men should still be treated with respect like any other human being. We can even learn from them to be confident of our gender and sexual identities, especially in spaces that deem us unsightly.

A Leather Man’s Wardrobe:

a recreation of what a stereotypical leather man’s ensemble would look like. I picked out what a leather man would typically wear which includes a black leather jacket, a body harness, a choker, a pair of black vinyl pants, a jockstrap, a pair of chunky black boots, a pair of sunglasses, and a black leather Muir cap.
