Jumping on this 2016 flashback. I thought it was a fun trend at first, but looking back really got me thinking before the pandemic.
The conditions around theatre felt different then. Auditoriums were fuller, there was a sense of ease and optimism, and both independent and mainstage works were being produced at a pace that felt sustainable.
Post-COVID, the landscape has shifted. Costs have rapidly risen, attention is harder to hold, and many of us are working under very different pressures. But the craft itself hasn’t disappeared. The rigour and commitment to making work is still very much here.
For me, the past few years have made it clear that how we work matters as much as what we make. The craft lives on, and so does the responsibility to look after ourselves and one another as we continue.
