Ales Stenar's journey in the galaxy
Background to the picture:
When the great pyramids in Giza had been standing for 3100-3300 years, this stone ship was raised during the younger iron age in Sweden, 500-700 years C.E. Swedish engineering was not as developed at that time in international comparison.

The purpose of the image is to show the night sky at the stone ship as it may have looked when it was first constructed prior to human-created light polluted skies.
Our galaxy was born 13.6 billion years ago and the solar system was born 4.5 billion years ago in the galaxy. Our solar systems rotates clockwise around the center of the galaxy and has made 19-20 revolutions in 4.5 billion years. 225-240 million years per revolution. This means we are rotating towards the upper left part of the Milky Way in the image.
One revolution ago i.e. last time the Earth looked at the galaxy from this view, the dinosaurs were born. They lived for two thirds to three quarters of the last revolution and went extinct some 70 million years ago. The modern humans were born 200 000 years ago, which is less than one thousands of a revolution around the galaxy center.
Our Sun is expected to live for another 4.5 billion years and 19-20 additional revolutions.

The strong yellow area at the horizon in the center of the image is light pollution from Rönne on Bornholm and the red area at the horizon to the right is light pollution from Swinoujscie in Poland across the Baltic sea.

How the picture was made (photo tech)
The picture can be taken during 1 week in April when the milky center is highest above the horizon without the moon above the horizon disturbing the dark night. Crisp clear atmosphere necessary without any clouds in the sky, which made it impossible during several years before the opportunity occurred. Cold weather during the night with 10 m/s steady wind.
Canon EOS R
16mm wide angle at f2.8, ISO6400, 13s exposure per light frame to avoid distorting stars due to earth rotation.
Deep sky astro photography technique
23 light frames of the galaxy, total of only 5 minutes exposure, regular tripod without star tracking, 5 kg hanging in the tripod to eliminate movement due to the wind.
40 bias frames to eliminate sensor noise
49 dark frames to eliminate long exposure noise
30 flat frames to correct for optical imperfections
25 dark flat frames to correct for long exposure noise in flat frames
3 frames with long exposure for the foreground with Ales Stenar
Bortle zone 4

Calibrated and processed as a linear 32-bit per channel floating point image in PixInsight
NoiseXterminator for removing luminance noise only.
GraXpert for light pollution gradient removals
Post-processed as a non-linear 16-bit per channel integer file in Photoshop
Processed both as an RGB and Lab image in PixInsight in various steps to enable extraction of the small signal levels from the galaxy
Stars and Milky way are color calibrated using a star atlas to ensure real color temperature of each star in the image.
The stretching process in careful small steps not to overexpose the nebulosity
Separate similar careful stretching process for the stars not to blow out highlights and colors of individual stars.
All relative sizes between the Milky Way and the foreground are intact and real. All taken with 16mm wide angle lens.

The images are calibrated to be viewed with 100Cd/m2 lightness on the screen, i.e. 15-20% lightness on a cell phone.

Vintergatan över kullar med tallar i spanska bergen. I nedre hörnet ser man ströljus från närmsta stad Cartagena, 35km bort.
Deep sky imaging astrofoto teknik blandat med landskapsfoto ger nästan en overklig känsla när man filtrerar bort ljuset av jordens atmosfär, bilden är färgkalibrerad för att stjärnor och vintergatan ska ha rätt färger. Inga färger har ändrats i framkallningen. Bilden behöver ses i mörker för att framträda bäst.

Porträtt av en Brun barkbock - Arhopalus rusticus.

Nog för att porträtt brukar vara svåra att fotografera bra, men sökte en utmaning och det här "porträttet" tog ändå priset i svårighetsgrad. Lånade denna 15mm stora långhorniga skalbagge från min kusin Niklas forskningsmaterial. Jag är glad att den är 15mm och inte 1.5 meter med de skärande svarta knivarna vid munnen.

Så togs bilden:

Brännvidd 100mm makroobjektiv, 37mm mellanringar
f 8.0 och 1/40s.
Eftersom skärpedjupet på objektivet med mellanringarna på makroavstånd i skala 1:1 enbart är 0.15 mm så krävdes 97 bilder av skalbaggen med ändrad fokus på 0.15 mm mellan bilderna för att få hela skalbaggen skarp.
En makrostudio byggdes av två A4 papper med två små LED paneler satta på 6500K som belysning. Stativ och studio på bottenplattan i huset för att det skall var vibrationsfritt och så får man hålla tummarna för att ingen lastbil kör förbi på gatan när bilderna tas så det vibrerar.
Bilderna är sedan behandlade först i DPP4 och Lightroom för färgkalibreringen och objektivdistorsion, stackade och mergade i Helicon focus med korrigering för focus breathing i objektivet, samt Photoshop för att göra sista korrigeringar och skärpan samt lägga till texten.

Fotade några av de 8, rätt ovanliga, Svarthakedoppingarna som bosatt sig i ett vattenhinder Eftersom det är mitt på golfbanan fick det bli i soluppgången men då är ljuset ändå som finast. Enda sällskapet var en ilsken rådjursbock som stod 25m bakom ryggen och vrålade. Till frukost byttes kameran mot klubborna och lite golf 😃🏌‍♂️

Photographed some of the 8, rather unusual, Slavonian Grebes that settled in a water obstacle Because it's in the middle of the golf course, it had to be at sunrise, but then the light is still at its best. The only company was an angry buck standing 25m behind and roaring. For breakfast, the camera was exchanged for the clubs and some golf 😃🏌‍♂️

2.5 years ago I took the pictures of Neowise 2020 in July in full street lighting. After a few months, I had given up trying to manage to get a decent image after many hours of studying advanced image processing. Then the comet passed by in January this year and I managed to get a picture of those images with light pollution, so I tried with Neowise again.
Here you see the result. Attached is also an original picture so you can see the problem. I also include again the green comet C2022E3 from January. On Neowise, which has much larger tails, you see the dust tail slanting upwards to the right and the straight ion tail diagonally upwards to the left. The latter points straight away from the sun in the direction of the solar wind. You can also see the coma (head) which glows a little blue on Neowise and clearly green on C2022.

Next time I will photograph a comet out in the countryside in the dark 🙂

Technical details for the interested: Photographed with a regular system camera and lens on a regular tripod without a motor in bortle zone 7 (almost metropolitan city lights). Image processed in PixInsight, the Xterminator programs and finally a touch in Lightroom. Hacked the Windows installation to run the Xterminator programs in the Cuda cores instead of the CPU. Otherwise, I would probably still have waited for the PC's 28 logical processors at 4 GHz. The 4000 Cuda cores made a lot of processing much faster. Processed in 32 bit floating point, but the comet itself in 64 bit floating point to be able to extract the tail.

Bestämde mig för att försöka fota den gröna kometen som passerade i slutet av januari. Fotade från balkongen med vanlig kamera och porträtt objektiv och vanligt stativ utan motoriserad ekvatorialupphängning. Dessutom är det Bortle class 7 av 9 d.v.s. näst högst mängd ströljus. Man ser ändå stjärnornas färger tydligt. De flesta gul-orangea och en del blå. Kometen är i alla fall grön med en nyans av rött i svansen. (Svårt att se på fb). Den här kometen har ingen stor svans.
På översiktsbilden ser man en stark orange stjärna i mitten högst upp samt en stark blå uppe till vänster. Det är Kochab respektive Pherkad, bägge i Ursa Minor.
Visst hade det blivit bättre i mörker långt från stan o ströljus samt med motoriserat stativ o teleobjektiv, men det blev i alla fall en bild av kometen. ✨️🌠

Decided to try to photograph the green comet C/2022E3 that passed by at the end of January. Photographed from the balcony with a regular camera and portrait lens and a regular tripod without motorized equatorial suspension. In addition, it is Bortle class 7 out of 9, i.e. second highest amount of stray light. You still see the colors of the stars clearly. Most yellow-orange and some blue. In any case, the comet is green with a hint of red in the tail. (Hard to see on fb). This comet does not have a large tail. In the overview image, you can see a strong orange star in the center at the top and a strong blue one at the top left. It is Kochab and Pherkad respectively, both in Ursa Minor. Of course, it would have been better in the dark far from the city or scattered light and with a motorized tripod or telephoto lens, but in any case it was a picture of the comet. ✨️🌠


Phototech: Canon R5, EF70-200 II IS f2.8 at 80mm, standard tripod. 80 exposures of comet combined with 40 dark frames, 40 bias frames, 40 flat frames. A real challenge with image processing due to all light pollution.
