📊 How to Play with Telemetry: Reading the Physics via PIDscope. 📊
Have you ever wondered exactly what your quad is complaining about mid-flight?
When your motors scream, your canopy wobbles, and your battery begs for mercy, they are all speaking the raw language of physics.
Instead of guessing what is broken, PIDscope acts as a digital stethoscope, letting us look directly past the carbon and into the invisible war between momentum, gravity, and electrical frequency.
Using PIDscope data means we aren't just tuning sliders anymore - we are actively rewriting how code interacts with the physical world.
Carrying a O4 Air Unit on a tiny 37-gram 1S micro framework is an incredible engineering feat by BETAFPV, but it does mean our little motors are fighting some serious physical inertia!
Out of the box, the stock configuration handles reasonably well, but it treats the quad like a standard ultra-light whoop. This can leave you with minor mid-throttle camera jello, a slightly delayed pitch reaction, or that classic low-frequency wobble when you try to catch a juicy power loop.
I decided to see if we could optimize things further. I flashed an alpha firmware build, captured high-density 1/1 full loop Blackbox logs, and loaded them directly into PIDscope to map exactly how this unique frame handles stress.
The data exposed three clear areas where we could help the flight controller:
1️⃣ The 140Hz Canopy Flex: The heavy O4 pod oscillates subtly on its frame tabs right at 140Hz. Because stock filters stop searching at 180Hz, this resonance was tricking the PID loop. Dropping dyn_notch_min_hz to 130 completely flattened this peak!
2️⃣ Asymmetric Mass Balancing: The step response showed minor high-frequency ringing on the Roll axis (canopy pendulum effect) and a slight rise-time delay on Pitch due to the front-to-back camera mass.
3️⃣ 1S Voltage Management: Hard punchouts cause single-cell voltage to sag temporarily to 3.1V, resulting in motor torque loss at low capacity. Turning on vbat_pid_gain_compensation completely smoothed this out.
I unified all these data points into a single custom script. The result? The whoop now tracks like an absolute arrow, the O4 video feed is completely jello-free, propwash shudders are heavily mitigated, and the motors finish hard flights perfectly icy cool.
