O trigo de vaca é uma espécie muito peculiar da família Orobanchaceae. Para além do seu aspeto distinto ao longo dos campos do norte de Portugal, esta planta possui elaiossomas que consistem em estruturas presentes na superfície das sementes ricas em lípidos e outros nutrientes atrativos para formigos, levando a que estas transportem e dispersem as suas sementes🤯🐜!

🇬🇧The common cow wheat is a very peculiar species belonging to the Orobanchaceae family.
In addition to its distinctive appearance throughout the fields of northern Portugal, this plant has elaiossomes which are structures present on the surface of seeds rich in lipids and other nutrients attractive to ants, leading to them transporting and dispersing their seeds🤯🐜 !

A erva abelhão é uma espécie de orquídea do género Ophrys foi descrita na região da Estremadura portuguesa em 1887 e é mais robusta do que a sua espécie irmã O. tenthredinifera!
Também se distingue pela sua "pêra" mais peluda😂!

🇬🇧The sawfly orchid belongs to the Ophrys genus and was first described in the Estremadura region of Portugal in 1887, being more robust than its close relative O. tenthredinifera!
It can be also distinguished by the long "chin" hairs😂!

A flor dos passarinhos é uma espécie de orquídea pertencente ao género Ophrys e surge especialmente na Estremadura e no Algarve!
Na última foto é possível ver a espécie de lado e eu acho que parece imenso uma ave a voar!

A erva ar**ha é mais uma orquídea do género Ophrys, muito distinta das restantes em Portugal!
Obtém este nome, pois a marca de H brilhante no lábio em certas flores assemelha-se a uma ar**ha!

🇬🇧The early spider orchid is another orchid of the Ophrys genus with a very different look from the others in Portugal!
It gets its name from the shiny silvery H-mark on the lip since that, in certain flowers, it resembles a spider!

A erva espelho e a abelhinha lusitana são duas subespécies de orquídea do género Ophrys que surgem no nosso país!
Este nome de espelho reflete😉 a grande mancha azul brilhante no centro do lábio que funciona como espelho, refletindo a luz como as asas da vespa Dasyscolia ciliata que é também coberta por imensos pêlos laranjas!!
Pois é, os machos desta espécie (polinizador exclusivo) pseudocopulam com a flor a "pensar" que é uma fêmea, polinizando a flor!!

🇬🇧The mirror orchid is an orchid of the Genus Ophrys!
It's called mirror orchid because of the big bright blue spot🪞 in the center of the lip that works as a mirror, reflecting light like the wings of the wasp Dasyscolia ciliata which is also covered with lots of orange hairs!!
Because of this, the males of this species (exclusive pollinator) pseudocopulate with the flower "thinking" it is a female, pollinating the flower!!

A abelhinha é uma pequena orquídea que é polinizada por machos do género de abelha Andrena através da mimetização da abelha fêmea!
Os machos "enganados" começam uma pseudo-cópula que leva à polinização das flores!

The "fooled" males pseudocopulate with the flower which leads to its pollination!

Não, não é um cogumelo estranho ou um líquen...é uma coalhada e trata-se de uma espécie de planta parasita que se desenvolve em hospedeiros de Cistus sp. neste caso tratava-se de Cistus monspeliensis!
Esta planta não só é um parasita obrigatório como se desenvolve dentro das raízes do hospedeiro surgindo apenas com a florescência, que é aquilo que se vê nas imagens!
É polinizada por formigas!

🇬🇧No, it's not a weird mushroom nor a lichen of some sort...it's a species of vampirecups🧛🏻‍♂️ which is a kind of parasitic plant that grows on Cistus sp. hosts, in this case, it was parasitizing Cistus monspeliensis!
This plant is not only an obligate parasite, but also develops inside the roots of the host, appearing only with the florescence, which is what you see in the pictures!
It's ant-pollinated!

A pinguícula é mais uma das espécies de plantas carnívoras que ocorrem em Portugal, sendo uma das mais distribuídas pelo país, ocorrendo de Norte a Sul em solos pobres e ácidos, arenosos ou turfosos!
Esta espécie é particularmente peculiar, mesmo dentro do seu género, devido às suas pequenas e fechadas flores e folhas curvas que parecem orelhas (pelo menos para mim😂).

🇬🇧The pale butterwort is another species of carnivorous plants that occur in Portugal, being one of the most widely distributed throughout the country, occurring from North to South in poor and acidic, sandy or peaty soils!
This species is particularly peculiar, even within its genus, due to its small, closed flowers and curved leaves that look like ears (at least for me😂).

A Cleome violeta ou mostarda-louca é o único membro representante da família Cleomaceae em Portugal e encontra-se um pouco por todo o interior com um foco principal na zona envolvente do vale do Guadiana!
Se olharem com um olho mais afinado às estruturas florais vão reparar que se assemelha de alguma forma às flores de couve/alface da família Brassicaceae...Isto porque ambas pertencem à mesma ordem Brassicales🤩!

🇬🇧The spider flower is the only representative member of the Cleomaceae family in Portugal and is found all over the interior with a large population around the Guadiana valley!
If you take a closer look at the floral structures, you will see that it somehow resembles cabbage/lettuce flowers from the Brassicaceae family... This is because both belong to the same order Brassicales🤩!

O Limodoro é uma orquídea que ocorre em bosques muitas vezes por baixo de grandes árvores onde grandes quantidades de matéria orgânica se acumula.
Isto porque esta orquídea trata-se de um parasita obrigatório de fungos (mico-heterotrófica) e não possui clorofila, ou seja, todo o seu desenvolvimento depende dos nutrientes retirados de fungos que se alimentam de matéria orgânica no solo destes bosques🤯🤯!
Caso isso não seja suficientemente maluco esta planta também demora perto de uma década desde semente até à floração, passando 8-10 anos a crescer no subsolo!! Eu tinha 10 anos quando estes indivíduos germinaram🤩🤩

🇬🇧The violet bird's-nest orchid occurs in forests, often under large trees where large amounts of organic matter accumulate.
This is because this orchid is an obligatory parasite of fungi (myco-heterotrophic) and does not produce chlorophyll, which means its entire development depends on nutrients taken from fungi that feed on organic matter in the soil of these woods🤯🤯!
In case that isn't crazy enough, this plant also takes close to a decade from seed to flowering, spending 8-10 years growing underground!! I was 10 years old when these individuals germinated🤩🤩

O pinheiro-baboso é possivelmente um dos melhores exemplo de herança vegetal da nossa flora nacional!
Trata-se de uma planta carnívora que ocorre em solos pobres e áridos na península Ibérica e Marrocos, no entanto, a maioria dos indivíduos encontram-se em Portugal.
É o único membro da família Drosophyllaceae e o seu parente mais próximo evolutivamente ocorre apenas na zona tropical na Costa de marfim em África🌍🤯!
Esta espécie de carnívora é invulgar não só pela sua origem filogenética, mas também pois as condições em que ocorre são incomuns para esta estratégia, a maioria das carnívoras ocorrem em meios alagados enquanto que esta ocorre em meios áridos!
Um tesouro nacional que deve ser protegido a todos os custos!

🇬🇧The portuguese dewy pine is possibly one of the best examples of the plant heritage of Portugal!
It's a carnivorous plant that occurs in poor and arid soils in the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco, however, most individuals are found in Portugal.
It's the only member of the Drosophyllaceae family and its evolutionary closest relative only occurs on the tropical zone in the Ivory Coast in Africa🌍🤯!
This carnivorous species is unusual, not only because of its phylogenetic origin, but also because the conditions in which it grows is also unusual. Most carnivorous plants grow in flooded environments while this one occurs in arid environments!
A portuguese national treasure that must be protected at all costs!
