Today marks the 100th birthday of the most famous and international Portuguese Artist, Amalia Rodrigues.
Known as the 'Rainha do Fado' (Queen of Fado), she was instrumental in popularising fado worldwide and travelled internationally throughout her career. Amália remains the best-selling Portuguese artist in history.

Amália to me simbolizes portugueseness, fado, almost like a second mother when I lived abroad, her voice a calming remedy to homesickness. In a way she represents every Portuguese woman, powerful and mysterious, strong and calm. I was inspired to do a series of portraits of Portuguese women that I admire. Not wanting to make them look like Amália, herself already an icon, I played Amália’s fados during the shoot and asked my guests to feel the lyrics and the mood.

This is an homage to her and to all Portuguese women
