International Conference
“Photography in-between Science, Art and Philosophy”

FBAUL - Auditorium Lagoa Henriques
November 26, 2022

International conference organised by University of Lisbon: CFCUL - Centre for the Philosophy of Sciences, FBAUL - Faculty of Fine Arts and IST - Instituto Superior Técnico. Photography has been the object of several theories, working with concepts as diverse as ap

paratus in the political/cultural approach by Vilém Flusser, as punctum and studium proposed by Roland Barthes, as psychoanalytic symptom advanced by Didi-Huberman, as aura (fetish) by Walter Benjamin, or as world-image by Susan Sontag. However, all theories point to the same evidence: the complex reality, the several dimensions, of photography. Photography has the capacity to capture and perceive the world, that is, it can, at the same time, absorb the world and understand it. Simultaneously, it encloses a fundamental play between its (apparent) passivity and its transformative effects, between its (questionable) impartiality and its critical power. Photography has yet another dimension, that of being a transcendental exercise: when thinking about the world, photography thinks of itself as an image. This colloquium aims at thinking photography from the perspectives of Science, of Art and of Philosophy. To approach scientific photography, artistic photography, and new technologies. In a world full of images and multiple techniques for capturing and producing images, it is imperative, more than ever, to think photography.

A Cosmic Walk between Science, Beauty and Art
- Miguel Claro Astrophotography

Light pollution is like a veil that keeps us away from the true magic and grandeur of
the Universe. A small fraction of that reality is transformed before our eyes, in a clear
and pristine sky, when beauty, science and art become unison, gaining a tangible
visual dimension that goes beyond human imagination. The Universe is the primary
abode of our civilization, a cosmic laboratory in a never-ending source of inspiration,
discovery and knowledge. Through Miguel Claro's photographic images - revealing
what the limits of human vision do not allow to achieve - let yourself be delighted
when embarking on a true Cosmic Walk from the four corners of the Earth, to the
most starry and colorful ends of our Universe.

Shifting spectra: Comparative approaches to image making in science and art

Shifting spectra explores a territory in which the artist and the scientist generate
comparative images of complex micro-organisms. Their results converge and
diverge as defined by the parameters and potential of the technology, the intended
audience, and their personal aesthetic. The past twenty years have seen extensive
advances in micro imaging that enable the scientist to move beyond the limitations of
earlier protocols and this is a territory into which artists have increasingly been
drawn.
In a recent collaboration with Dr. Louise Hughes at Oxford Instruments we used
Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) to identify airborne pollutants on leaf
samples collected from sites across Europe. Using EDS it is possible to develop a
range of results that identify individual and combinations of elements, ascribing
specific colours to each element. Colour palettes can be changed in order to reveal
or clarify information within the data. Additionally, varying scan speeds impacted on
levels of resolution create painterly pixilation akin to Pointillism within
post-impressionist painting. Exploring the extensive parameters offered by the
technology the scientist and the artist were able to create contrasting results
informed by their respective cultures and personal aesthetic choices.

"Invented in 1975 at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, N.Y., the first digital camera displayed photos on its screen. Steven J. Sasson, inventor of the device, told The New York Times in 2015. “It was a photographic system to demonstrate the idea of an all-electronic camera that didn’t use any consumables in the capturing and display of still photographic images.”"

"Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) made numerous photographic trips to systematically document the Russian Empire. Prokudin-Gorskii used a camera that exposed one oblong glass plate three times in rapid succession through three different color filters: blue, green, and red. For formal presentations, the negative plate was placed in a triple lens lantern so the three exposures could be superimposed to form a full color image on a screen. Due to the brief time lapse between the fixation of the three frames on the plate, the perspective is slightly distorted to a varying degrees on the final image and results in random shimmers of color."

"James Clerk Maxwell produced the first color photograph that did not immediately fade or require hand painting. The Scottish scientist chose to take a picture of a tartan ribbon, “created by photographing it three times through red, blue, and yellow filters, then recombining the images into one color composite.” Maxwell’s three-color method was intended to mimic the way the eye processes color, based on theories he had elaborated in an 1855 paper."

"English botanical artist, collector and photographer Anna Atkins was the first person to illustrate a book with photographic images.
Her nineteenth-century cyanotypes used light exposure and a simple chemical process to create impressively detailed blueprints of botanical specimens.
Anna's innovative use of new photographic technologies merged art and science, and exemplified the exceptional potential of photography in books."
