Yesterday’s portrait photography workshop in Madeira 👌🏼

We spent a full day, from sunrise to sunset, exploring different parts of the island and capturing portraits in a variety of locations and lighting conditions.

In the near future, we’re planning to introduce more workshops like this, both for small groups and as private one-on-one experiences. We’ll take you through our photography workflow, share our approach to composition and lighting, and show you how to create interesting, eye-catching portraits.

The photos you see here are just a few quick captures I managed to take along the way, as my main focus was on guiding our participant rather than taking my own photos. But even these examples give you an idea of what’s possible!

I believe this kind of workshop can be a great introduction to professional portrait or fashion photography, or an opportunity to take your existing skills to the next level.

Of course, working with a talented professional model like is a completely different experience from photographing someone who isn’t used to being in front of the camera. Learning how to direct everyday people and make them feel comfortable is a skill that comes with time and experience.

But having the opportunity to work with a professional model allows you to focus more on your creativity, experiment with different ideas, enjoy the process, and build a stunning collection of images for your portfolio.

A few of my favourite portraits from Fanal Forest, all taken this year.

As you can probably tell, I always gravitate towards that cinematic, editorial, straight-out-of-a-magazine look. I just can’t help myself — it looks too good! 👌🏼

Sadly, many of these spots are now either inaccessible or have completely changed over time, meaning some of these compositions can never be recreated.

That makes these photographs even more special to me, but it also brings new creative challenges — finding fresh perspectives, discovering new compositions, and capturing something extraordinary in this ever-changing forest.

Spent the summer at home this year, but I’m definitely not sad about it - summer in Madeira is pretty amazing.

One of the best things about Madeira is how long the warm season lasts. You can enjoy beautiful summer weather from May all the way through October, which gives you plenty of flexibility to find great deals on flights and hotels and experience it for yourself.

Everyone knows I have a thing for camera bags and organization, so I was pretty excited when PGYTECH reached out and asked me to test their OnePro Flex Adventure Camera Backpack.

I decided to go with the 40L version. I already own a few 50L backpacks, and while they’re great when I need to carry a lot, they’re simply too big for most day trips. So far, 40L feels like a really good middle ground.

After using the backpack for the past two weeks, there’s a lot I like about it. The whole bag feels very well thought out. It looks surprisingly compact when it’s not expanded, but once you need the extra space, you can fit a lot more inside. The frame is ergonomic and, most importantly for me, very comfortable to carry for an entire day, even fully loaded.

I tested the L camera cube, which fits all my camera gear and fills almost the entire backpack. With the M cube, you can dedicate roughly half of the backpack to camera gear and use the rest for clothes, food and other essentials - probably the setup I’d choose for most adventures.

The material is splash-resistant and really easy to clean, and there’s also side access to the camera, which I’m already used to using with my other backpacks, so it fits naturally into my workflow.

One thing I’m still getting used to is the main rear compartment opening. The zipper goes around the shoulder straps and the back side opens to the side, which means I can’t easily grab the bag by a strap and move it around while the compartment is open. But this is also my first backpack with this type of opening, so it might simply take some getting used to.

Overall, after two weeks of testing, my experience has been very positive. And I’ve already caught myself looking through Pgytech France other products to see what else might make it onto my gear list 👌🏼

I’ve spent over four years exploring Madeira, and I’ve had the privilege of witnessing and capturing so many unforgettable moments here.

The landscapes on this island are truly one of a kind. Even after years of travelling around Madeira and discovering its hidden corners, I’m still far from getting bored.

I’m already at the point where I’m comfortable shooting a big part of my content using just the Find X9 Ultra.

The Log footage is surprisingly easy to color grade, and I’ve been really impressed with the results. In this video you can also see the comparison between the different lenses, but the real standout for me is the 230mm super telephoto - the perfect focal length for capturing subjects that would normally be far beyond your reach.

People often ask if I’m worried that phones will eventually outperform cameras. My answer is always the same: the more convenient my setup becomes, the more likely I am to capture moments I would have otherwise missed. For me, better technology doesn’t replace creativity - it simply gives me more freedom to create.

I honestly think canyoning is the #1 experience to try in Madeira. 💦

It’s perfect even if it’s your first time - no previous experience or equipment needed, making it an amazing adventure for almost anyone.

Madeira has a canyoning level for everyone.

Level 1 and 2 are all about fun and are great for kids, families, and beginners. Level 3 is where it starts to feel like a real adventure, with big rappels, jumps, and sometimes even a zip line. Level 4 takes it further with higher descents, more effort, and some of the most scenic canyons on the island. Then comes Level 5, with huge multi-pitch waterfalls and a proper adrenaline rush.

No matter your level, canyoning in Madeira is one of the wildest ways to experience the island.
