🇵🇸 Today, May 11th, is World Kufiya Day. For the past 74 years, the Kufiya has become one of the symbols of the fight for freedom and self-determination of the Palestinian people and, in some ways, the unofficial flag of Palestine. Currently, the only factory still working in Palestine is the Hirbawi factory, founded 60 years ago in the city of Hebron. Following the death of its founder Yaser Hirbawi in 2018, his three children continue to work for the preservation of one of the most significant elements of the Palestinian material heritage. There are fifteen industrial looms in the heart of the factory, only half of which are used, as the sale of kufiyas has declined since the 1990s. The intense sound of the machines rumbles against the walls of the factory, catching in its echo the subtle sound of the voices of the workers. In addition to the characteristic sound of the looms, the factory seems to be a rainbow made of fabrics of different colors and embroidery. Although traditional kufiya consists of a white cotton fabric embroidered with black thread, today Hirbawi also produces kufiyas with other colors. As Yaser Hirbawi once said in an interview, kufiya is everything: the past, the preset and the future of the Palestinian people.
