This 15-second single-exposure photograph captures the natural dark sky of my hometown, Maricao, western Puerto Rico, as the magnificent Milky Way appears to flow like smoke from a chimney in the Santa Ana Observation Tower. Built in 1940, this iconic structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Diversify Photo features this image in its 2024 Photos of the Year selection.

“Four Degrees: Eco-Anxiety and Climate Change” presented by Humble Arts Foundation and Strange Fire Collective

[Yadira] Hernández-Picó reports the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Nearly five years on, full financial and material recovery remains out of reach for many in the unincorporated US territory. An elderly Puerto Rican woman stands in the kitchen of her once-covered home. Small details—clean dishes on the drying rack, stacked cooking ware at her feet— emphasize how violent weather conditions interrupt life’s daily routine. Her expression could be determination, or resignation, or the look of someone who doesn’t have the luxury of waiting in safety while wealthy nations decide if it’s in our best interest to address the environmental damage we’ve already caused.

“We are delighted to publish this outstanding, extreme issue featuring exclusive interviews and articles focused on Beautiful and ruined - destroyed landscapes! […] This is, without a doubt, one of the best issues published by Lens Magazine! Enjoy!”

Honored to be featured in the new issue of Lens Magazine, February 2021. Some truly excellent photographers and great content in this Issue #77: LANDSCAPES | Beautiful & Destroyed.

Three years after made landfall in , thousands still lack a place to live safely and with dignity. This destroyed landscape series , with an introductory essay by Ana Teresa Toro, chronicles the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, in particular in my hometown of , in western Puerto Rico, where many still live beneath blue tarps as a substitute roof for their homes.

This long-term project has been supported by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures and the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades.
