The photographers who make the biggest leaps forward are rarely the ones with the newest gear. They’re the ones who learn to see the world differently.

After teaching photographers around the world for many years, I’ve watched this transformation happen again and again. The real breakthrough comes when someone begins to recognise beautiful light, notice emotion, and discover possibilities in ordinary places.

This is what we spend most of our time working on during my workshops.

Not simply taking photographs.

Learning to see.

What changed your photography the most wasn’t the camera in your hands—it was the moment you began to see the world with new eyes.

Do children really need to smile for a photograph to be beautiful?

It’s one of the most common assumptions in family photography, and for years, I watched parents gently encourage, remind, or insist that their children smile for the camera.

But the images that move me most have never been the ones with the biggest grins.

They’re the ones that feel real.

When I first started photographing my own children, what I wanted most was honesty.

I wanted to capture who they really were, not a version of them performing for the camera.

Later, when I began photographing other children, I noticed something that made this much harder.

Many mothers would encourage, remind, or even insist that their children smile.

It was such a common belief that a good photograph had to include a big smile.

And it often felt like I was constantly trying to challenge that myth.

Trying to reassure parents that their child did not need to smile for the photograph to be beautiful.

Because if a smile appears, it should be genuine.

Not requested.

Not forced.

Not performed..

Because authenticity will always be more powerful than a forced smile.

What matters most to you in a portrait: happiness or honesty?

When I first started learning photography, I was told never to shoot into the sun.

And honestly?

For a while, I believed it.

Like many beginners, I treated photography rules as facts rather than suggestions.

But over time, I learned that rules can be helpful… until they start limiting the way you see.

Some of my favourite images were created with the sun directly in front of me.

Not because I ignored the light.

Because I learned to work with it.

This is the first post in a new series:

Photography myths I stopped believing.

I’d love to hear yours.

What photography rule do you no longer believe in?

Over the years, photography has taken me to many places and introduced me to thousands of children.
Different countries.
Different cultures.
Different languages.
Yet the lessons they teach are remarkably similar.
These are just a few of the things children have taught me—not only as a photographer, but as a person.
Which one resonates with you the most?
Happy Children’s Day ❤️
