Nannorrhops ritchiana (Mazari palm) is the sole species in the genus Nannorrhops in the palm family Arecaceae. It is found abduntly in the dry rivers bed of Balochistan it's an evergreen plants which we call Dazz in balochi.
Making things out of the leaves of the Mazari palm tree has long been a speciality of this province, where the plant grows wild in the mountainous terrain.
Mazari palm is not only important for the rural economy but the structure of these plants is such that they can reduce the damage inflicted by flash floods and it also helped prevent soil erosion.
It is the Mazari palm’s versatility that makes it so valuable.In Balochistan many of his household items were made from palm leaves.Its lush green and versatile leaves can be used for eco-friendly matting, dishes,broom,baskets,prayer mat,fan and many other thinks which we use in daily life.
Palm items are much better than plastic ones. Food rots very fast in plastic dishes, but it doesn’t in palm leaves and these items are cheaper than plastic ones, and they are also stronger; they don’t break quickly and can be washed frequently. Since they allow air to circulate, they preserve everything in good condition.
The product of these palm are sold around Pakistan and here are people who take palm dishes, trays, ornamental items and sandals to foreign countries like Germany, Italy and France and they sell them for good money there.
