Leather Series (2/3) : HANDBAGS

The next assignment of the course introduced students to various more difficult techniques of saddle stitching and other advanced processes such as dyeing, installing hardware and straps, and translating patterns to completed project.

Leather series (1/3) ; Wallets

The course started off with students practicing working with leather by making simple wallets, an effort in sharpening their skills of using manual tools and stitching techniques. The wallets are intentionally left in their natural finish so that they patina through the course and students can experience first hand how leather ages.

Custom made saddle bag dyed in dark hazelnut, handstitched, with antique brass finished hardware and brass rivets. Always love the contrast between the hardware and the leather.

Custom bifold made in , dyed dark hazelnut. According to the the clients specifications, a lower density stitch was done on the exterior and high density stitch on the inside, which really made both the stitching lines more prominent, and personally i was pretty satisfied with this detail.

Dark pine green exterior with interior in natural, stitched with a cerulean blue thread. A custom Bifold in vegtan, where the client asked if i had colours other than shades of brown, they specifically wanted green, which coincidentally i did have and a shade i absolutely loved and had always wanted to try out. I must say it came out great, especially when paired with the vegtan in natural.

The veins tell it all! Natural full grain always.

Bifold purse in black .
Saddle stitched, hand dyed, hand finished.
It came out rather slim considering there are 10 card pockets and one long pocket for cash. It is suffice to say that using this wallet, one will probably never run out of space for their cards or pretty much anything one can fit in a wallet. Satisfaction had been achieved.

I haven't done many projects in black since i was never too fond of the colour as a dye, i thought it was too typical yet not a natural tone like shades of brown. Clearly i was wrong.
I made this as a custom order, and i have to say black comes out lovely especially when there's a nice luster/shine to it.
I have some really interesting projects coming up and i am definitely adding a black variant for them.

Custom made bifold and sleeve in hazelnut chocolate mix.
This was an interesting design which came out looking pretty neat, especially the way the carving came out on the strap, which was a customization proposed by the client. Though at first i thought we'd have to make the strap too wide to fit a neat carving there, but they insisted on the strap, for which i am glad they did because this way the strap gets to be the star of the show and did a pretty good job at that. And thank fully, my carving skills did not fail me either.
Will be posting some more carving work soon, and if you enjoy this aspect of leather craft, do let me know what you think would look great carved on leather.
