Faizabad Residents: Asphalt Plant Fumes Are Affecting Our Community
An asphalt/bitumen plant operating near Faizabad has residents increasingly concerned — and many are already noticing the effects.
Residents in the area report:
Burning, watery eyes and throat irritation, especially in the evenings
Persistent coughing, worse at night
Headaches and dizziness when the plant is active
Worsening symptoms for those with asthma or breathing conditions
A constant chemical smell that doesn't go away
Why this isn't just a bad smell:
The fumes released during asphalt processing contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), VOCs, sulfur compounds, and fine particulates. PAHs are classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans, and long-term exposure has been linked in studies to higher risk of respiratory illness. Unlike road workers who go home at the end of a shift, residents living near the plant face this exposure continuously — day after day, with no break from it.
Most at risk in our community:
Children and elderly residents
Anyone with asthma, COPD, or heart conditions
Households and shops closest to the plant
What we're asking for:
Immediate air quality testing near the plant by the relevant EPA/environmental authority
A public health assessment of nearby residents
The plant to switch to low-emission (warm-mix) processes, or relocate away from residential zones
Transparency from plant operators on emissions data
If you or your family are experiencing symptoms, please document them (dates, times, symptoms) and share your experience — this matters when filing a formal complaint with local authorities.
